Windows 98 won't boot normal and doesn't see CD-ROM drives

moving to XP

And absolutely positively do not attempt to do a hard drive upgrade from 98SE to WinXP. The only good way to install WinXP is clean. Better than 90% of the people who complain to me about WinXP have problems because they had Win98SE and ran the upgrade program. Just say "No". Save your stuff...

AMD Hosed me, What should I do?

Just remember, folks, you can't get warranty service from AMD for their Boxed set processors without the HS/F. If your processor fries in 2 years and you call AMD for replacement, they will ask for the serial number on the HS/F. They also won't send you a new one until you've sent back the...

getting a new case, so planning on re-applying Artic silver while im at it.

Spend the $3 at your local drug store and buy some razor blades. They do an excellent job of spreading (using a very light touch, obviously, since you don't want to gouge the die) and clean easily for re-use.

OMG!!!! this is CRAZY!!!

It's an AGP card. It sits in an AGP slot. Every motherboard I've ever had with an AGP slot shares an IRQ with the PCI slot next to it. So it's silly to put anything in the PCI slot next to the AGP card anyway. Sooo . . . . since that slot is pretty much useless, why not put it to good use...

Windows Xp keeps restarting during installing!

*nod* What Ark said. It sounds like you set up the BIOS to boot from CD for the XP installation. That's fine. But after the driver and file load step, when it goes to reboot, you need to interrupt it and switch the first boot device to something other than your CD drive (floppy or HDD-0)...

WIN 2K PRO SHUTDOWN ISSUE

Actually, I didn't know. My electronics skills aren't what they should be. *blush* But the initial point is to further track down the culprit. If the only thing connected to the case and the mobo both is the power switch, then that tells me what part of the case is the problem. Mastertech01...

*sigh* It doesn't make any sense to me either. SexyK: if the power switch wasn't connected right, it wouldn't turn on - at least I've never incorrectly attached the power switch and had it turn on in the past. WarCon: I'm using (and be nice ;)) a fairly standard Asus VT8200 GF3 ti200. But...

Thank you for the quick response. Tried that already. Is there anyplace else something might be shorting out that doesn't relate to the mobo itself? The power switch perhaps? If it was shorting out there, would it still be feeding power to the board just fine?
