    Logitech MX510 (blue) $29.99 AR + free 2day ship

I knew those frog bastards would slap a laser in the MX510 and call it a new mouse. The MX510 has the worst ergonomics of any mouse I have used in 10 years, but Logitech adopted a Form over Function "as long as it looks pretty that's enough" mentality with the entire MX series of mice, that...

UPDATE: Provantage WILL honor their pre-order 6800 price

Well, I ordered on July16 at $345 shipped, and got an email July21 that it had shipped. But there's no tracking number (as of July22), and with this huge price increase announcement I'm very suspicious. Has anyone called provantage to see what is up with someone in my situation? thx! rms

    SIS 755 Athlon 64 ECS Motherboard 72$

I've heard of many problems with this board. What's worse is that anyone having a poor experience from low-balling on the motherboard usually ends up dissing AMD forever, which is a shame. Spend a few bucks more on a quality board or wait til ECS gets the bugs out. rms

    fan on the radiator necessary?

I wonder what type radiator fan we are talking about here. I have 3 low-speed 92mm Sunon fans on mine (a flatpanel type) and its basically inaudible. You don't need much airflow on a mildly overclocked system as you discuss here. As far as sound sources go, your drives will be the loudest...

Need recommendations for overclocked Barton system

[/i] False. Both boards have the identical Soundstorm chipset. The Asus has an additional coaxial (I believe) output, I think a 2nd NIC, and a gameport. The Abit has heatsink boltholes, which greatly increases heatsink options, higher voltage options. Both would be fine for running a 2500+...

    2.45ghz barton oc

To get to 230fsb, you'll likely need to do a few things: 1) Change memory timings to either 11-3-3-2, or 12-3-3-2 2) Raise Vchipset to the max. Sometimes a voltmod is needed. 3) You can go higher on the Vcore. Just keep loaded temps in the low to mid-50s. rms

Actually, TLOEG bites the big one, an example of a superhero movie gone wrong. Dunno about the others. BTW, the best HollywoodVideo deal I've seen was last year when the local grocery chain was selling cereal at 10/$10 (about $.08/oz, which is quite good). The kicker is that each box had 2...

    Another good 2500+ OC!!

Yes, it's well-known that higher values can give better throughput on nforce2 boards. I run my 1700+ at 10.5 x 230fsb = 2.4ghz, with memory timings 12-3-3-2.0 with geil pc3500. This is with chipset and dimm voltmods, 1.9v Vcore, and watercooling. With my 9700pro I hit 6000 in 3dmark03. [/i]...

To water cool or not to water cool?

I'm using homebrew watercooling now, and I think an SP-97 & a 92mm fan (or even a 120mm fan with an adaptor) is a smarter investment. Water is more of a PITA than anything else. rms

Be sure to experiment with your ram timings. I'd been running my 1700+ at 10x230 for a long time at 11-3-2-2.0, and just recently found that it was stable at 10.5x230 by changing the timings to 11-3-3-2.0. rms

Athlon 64 Vs. Pentium 4 article: On the Justification for Quake3 as a CPU Benchmark

Hi, this is about your Athlon 64 Vs. Pentium 4 article, specifically the use of Quake3 as a CPU benchmark when comparing AMD vs. Intel cpus, as shown on this page http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1884&p=13 http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NTI0LDU=...

QUAKE3 IS A WORTHLESS BENCHMARK. WHY IS IT STILL BEING USED

Its now almost 2004, and sites are *still* using this 3-year old game to benchmark. FACT: Both 3DNOW and SSE are non-functional in Quake3 on AthlonXP cpus (and probably disabled as well on the Athlon64, no data there as yet), but SSE is *enabled* on all Intel cpus. Not a big surprise there...

Best copper P4 heatsink right now ??

The SLK900 has been superceded as far as I can tell by the SLK947 (?), which has fewer parts interference issues. Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not clear if its still offered as a four-bolt model. Anyway if I was buying an air-cooler now I'd want the SP94 and a nice big 92mm fan. rms

Quake3 biased Against AthlonXP cpus ! Large speedups possible!

I said SSE, not SSE2. This feature is there already in the Quake3 code, and the Intel chips are allowed to use it, while apparently no Athlon SSE-capable cpu is allowed to use it. Sounds unfair to me. rms

Quake3 biased Against AthlonXP cpus ! Large speedups possible!

I'm also wondering about the Athlon64 and Opteron in Quake3. If its true that there is no SSE support in the game for these cpus, this is a massive handicap that makes such benchmarks unfair in the extreme. rms

Quake3 biased Against AthlonXP cpus ! Large speedups possible!

http://speedycpu.dyndns.org/opt/ I think this guy is worth talking to. He argues that Quake3 is very biased toward Intel chips and if it simply detected the athlon as SSE-enabled rather than 3dnow-enabled you would see huge speedups. He apparently worked with AMD trying to incorporate this...
