    AMD Opteron 170 overclocking

    I think what myocardia meant by undervolting is you are at 1.30V, the stock vcore is 1.35 not 1.48 or higher. My Opteron does it's best at 1.38V - 1.41V. Have you tried something between 1.30 and 1.48 ?

    My 170 is a CCBBE 0615EPMW, it'll do 3.0 with 1.472V. screen shot - http://www.xmission.com/~nova/hb/dtdfi.jpg I've since backed it down to 2.93 and 1.40V, runs much cooler and the extra .07 really didn't make that much of a difference.

    Some of the DFI's had a problem a while back when using all four slots (would not boot, would not see all sticks, etc). Also had to run at T2,.... dunno, maybe they have straightened out now?

    Just fine,... my K6-2/500 is good also,.... I guess it just boils down to what you are doing. If you want to run the latest and greatest games it may just be fair, if you do word processing and internet it's more than good.

    Well,...because the 3000+ has a 9X multiplier and the 170 is a 10X. I agree it should not be a problem but (ya never know), I'd still go with the defaults, ensure things are stable, then start the OC.

    Whoops, sorry,... hmmm,.... wonder if you can still find an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum??? Probably not,..... unless you can find something used, I think the only other option is the EPoX EP-9NDA3I, but it is an nForce 3 250 board. Check your local Mom&Pops, maybe there is a leftover AGP NF4 board...

    I'd recommend a DFI LP Ultra D and an Opteron 170,..... should come in right about $300 and OC to 3.0 GHz ;) as long as you have a good PSU. Second choice would be Asus A8N-E and Opteron 170.

    Drop your HT to 3X, for now. Set your memory divider to 1/02 or 2/3, this will take your ram out of the equation and let you concentrate on the CPU. Now start bumping up your HTT/FSB and see how high you can get it, then go on to the memory. Best work on one thing at a time, find its limits...

    Don't worry about CPUZ reporting it as a Toledo, it really is a Denmark. What does CPUZ report your CPU V. as? Personally I do not use any of those power management programs. Have you turned off Cool & Quiet in the bios?

    First off set HT down to 4X. Second, yes, you are overclocking your ram, use a divider. What MB are you using? There are a couple of good A64 OC guides around, have a look at them.

    Just about any of the Barton cores will do ya. Best bets would likely be 2500+ or 3200+, or one of the mobile 2500+, 2600+, 2800+. With that MB and memory you should be able to run any of these at a 400 FSB and at least 2.2GHz and likely higher

    Are you sure it freezes cause it gets too hot? I'd suggest you bump up the CPU volts a bit. At least to where CPUZ reads 1.35 - 1.37. When you re-seated, did you remove, clean, and re-apply thermal paste? Or just wiggle the HS around a bit?

    Hmmm,.... looks to me like your board is slightly under V. I agree with cmdrdredd, get the volts up to at least 1.35 - 1.37 or even 1.40 and see how it does.

    How low will the bios allow you to set the fan on CPU temp? If you can set it to 20C or 15C it will likely stay on all the time. Do you have Cool&Quiet disabled?
