    Best 8800GT?

Hilariously enough, I've just completed a step-up from my $110 (-$15 MIR which doesn't invalidate the step-up) 8600GT to a $270 8800GT which if you look online is $20 more expensive and out of stock. So I'm very happy with how the step-up program turned out.

    Need help with Thinkpad purchase...

The T has no built-in firewire. The T's main advantages are greater portability, better graphics, and a metal top surface which supposedly makes it more durable - although to me it did the opposite, because it flexes more in the middle and makes the keyboard scratch the screen when severe...

    using 2 batteries in a t41

I just let it discharge to 0. It's not that big of a deal, and I'm more concerned with convenience. Since I have an old main battery too, it would be useful for me to have such a feature too, since if the slim battery is at 0, I can't take out the main battery to swap with the other one without...

T40 Display missing pixel (0,0) NOW FIXED!

237358U (fyi all T40s are 2373); not sure about the driver revision. The version on ati2dvag.dll is 6.14.0010.6392, and the date is from 2003, so it's older than yours. I had the pixel bug, and now it's gone.

T40 Display missing pixel (0,0) NOW FIXED!

It's a driver problem. I've seen that pixel not work with an older driver on my 1400x1040 in native, I've seen two pixels not work in non-native (800x600 scaled up it was I think), and right now it's working in native (24bpp).

    IBM T40/ T41 Flaws???

    1) CPU/GPU power circuits buzz ever so slightly when in some power states, like in some instances of scrolling. Not usually noticeable. 2) If you're carrying your laptop with the rest of your junk, the metal sheet that is the top surface flexes when something pushes against it and may cause the...

Is it safe to walk around/put laptop in a bag while it is on or in standby mode?

My T40 is never off - it is either on or sleeping (standby). (It will go to hibernation if sleeping with no AC after 6 hours, but that rarely happens.) I carry it in my backpack with no extra padding and all ventilation blocked for 10-12 hours a day, and I've never seen it so much as get hot to...

One more question for T40 owners

You have cost IBM a considerable amount of money in technical support by sending back laptops with superfluous problems. (Not that your actions can hurt IBM financially in any tangible way...) Most of the problems you describe are inherent in the design of the T40 line or the components used...

One more question for T40 owners

Well, I do think that Mocca's pickiness has cost IBM several hundred dollars by now. Some of his "problems" are quite ridiculous.

azazello HELP ME plz.. SOS..T40P and MS bluetooth mouse : MOUSE SUCKS unless you use the MS transceiver

I don't know if you have to use the MS BT stack, but that's what worked for me. Actually, the procedure for installing is a bit different: you just find the Bluetooth receiver (under "Bluetooth radios" in "Device manager"), right click that, and click "Update driver". Then get to the point...

azazello HELP ME plz.. SOS..T40P and MS bluetooth mouse : MOUSE SUCKS unless you use the MS transceiver

Read my post above carefully. It mentions where the installer for the MS BT stack resides. You can uninstall the IBM Bluetooth software from the Control Panel. I haven't used this mouse with IBM Bluetooth software, but it works great with the MS stack and I expect you'll be able to make it work...

One more question for T40 owners

The video card switches display modes when going from the boot screen to the Windows startup screen. (Obviously installing the drivers won't affect that, since the drivers are not loaded when the alleged flicker occurs.) It's not unusual for the card to output crap on screen when switching modes...

    yet another T40 question

With the generic WinXP install (no IBM power management software installed), the T40 is perfectly safe to put on/off AC while on suspend. I have never had it crash due to that. (Some third-party drivers might potentially be buggy when handling suspend/resume, which may cause your crash.)

That's interesting. I'm using the mouse with the T40 built-in receiver and the MS BT stack and I haven't had any problems - no "skipping" (do you mean dipping sample rates?). One other person has been using the same combination and has seen no problems either. The Intellimouse software is...

T40P question: how do i cycle the battery? where is the utility?

(I'm not fully sure about the 300 number, but it's not far from that.) Also, leaving the laptop always plugged in will not harm a Li-ion battery. The charger protects it against overcharge, and full charge does not harm a Li-ion battery.

T40P question: how do i cycle the battery? where is the utility?

You're right, there's a lot of confusion with regard to maintaining batteries since the procedures are different for different chemicals. A lot of technical support manuals and personnel offer plain wrong advice. The authoritative advice with regard to using and maintaining a Li-ion battery...

T40P question: how do i cycle the battery? where is the utility?

You do not cycle the battery. You cycle NiCd and NiMH batteries. This is a Li-ion battery. Discharging below 10% and leaving it at low charge destroys it.

    80-GB 2.5" hard drives: MK8025GAS vs. 80GN

I'm looking to upgrade my laptop's hard drive and the highest capacity available on the market seems to be 80GB. The two models are 80GN by Hitachi/IBM and MK8025GAS by Toshiba. The cost is nearly identical, about $240. The two drives have almost indistinguishable specs. Can anyone recommend...

    battery life on Thinkpad T40

The 7 hour figure is for the 9-cell high-capacity battery. There's no way a regular capacity battery can power a T40 for more than 6 hours with everything at minimum. I usually get about 3.5 hours out of my T40 on standard battery with LCD at low brightness, wifi/BT/cdrom/ethernet turned off...

    Help Me....URGENT

Yeah, what I'm saying is the price difference between the 1.5ghz and 1.3ghz processors may not justify the performance difference. There are models with 1.3 and 1.5ghz and a higher resolution display (and an M9/32M instead of FireGL/64M in the T40p). Call IBM and ask them, they should be able...

    Help Me....URGENT

So your verdict is, these models are identical and it doesn't matter which one you choose. When it says "wireless upgradable", it means you have to select and pay for a miniPCI card when customizing. If it says that wireless is built in, it may still let you customize the card. You can upgrade...

    Help Me....URGENT

You might want to reconsider the difference between P-M 1.3 and 1.5 - it is only 15%. That money may be better spent buying extra RAM (but not from IBM, buy on the common market). Personally, I spent it on a model with a bigger display and a Radeon M9 (at the expense of a smaller hard drive, too...

Is laptop HD upgradable on your own? IE from a 4.2K to a 7.2K?

Yes, of course. Keep in mind that laptop HDDs come in two heights: 9.5 and 12 (?) mm. Most new ones are 9.5. They are sold in a huge variety of online shops. The leading manufacturers are IBM/Hitachi and Fujitsu, and there are several runner-ups.

    T40: 1.3PM sxga MR9000 vs 1.5 xga MR7500-thoughts?

I bought a SXGA+ T40 with P-M 1.3, US$1800 base price (they had a sale. A new one started today I think) and $150 for a wifi card and an extra memory stick. I am extremely satisfied, particularly with the GPU performance (the screen is not that good, but better than what else I've seen). I don't...

    Upgrading a Laptop's GPU? (T40)

You can't upgrade the GPU - the package is soldered in. You can, however, upgrade the CPU. The problem is finding the chip for sale - I haven't seen any places where you can get P-M chips alone. Personally, I'm holding out hope that the next iteration of Banias will be pin- and socket-compatible...

    T40p video benchmarks

    Impressions of a T40 owner...

People complaining about "text being too small" on the SXGA+ screen need to learn to set their DPI appropriately (the native DPI for the T40 SXGA+ is 125). This makes properly written programs increase the size of all their graphical elements. Windows also allows you to use bigger icons (not all...

That is not true. I have installed the stock Catalyst drivers on my T40 and not only does it accept them with no trouble, but I see no difference in performance or otherwise from the stock IBM drivers. In fact the device identification string for the driver is the same in both ("Radeon 9000...
