UltraWide why do you suggest getting the 58U model? Disk is smaller, slower processor, no burner, no wireless built in. It would cost a lot to bring it up the 72U spec. I know the 58U has the SXGA+ screen and M9 graphics but is it really worth it? Would the 58U be better for MS Office, email and...
On the XGA screen on a new R40 I have noticed that the gradations (left to right) in the Explorer toolbars are rendered poorly. If you tilt the screen back a bit you can really see the staircasing and the poor blending of colors. On a CRT you get a subtle gradation from left to right.
Have you...
I suggest complaining on the IBM forum site as Old Spooky has proposed. I just posted saying I was not buying a T40 because of all the problems but especially the limited vertical viewing angles.
I am VERY disappointed.
Moose: From what esaleris say's about his SXGA+ screen it seem like the vertical viewing sensitivity is not much better than the XGA screens on the T40. As I said earlier I think I will go buy a T30 from IBM auctions. All I am missing out on is the long battery life of the PM.
Hi Moose:
That's what I remember about my T22 display as well.
How does the T30 XGA compare to the T22? I may just get one of the T30s that IBM auctions on eBay.
Thanks for your help.

esaleris: The issue with the a/b card is probably regulatory. You definitely can replce the MPCI card. Take a look at the hw reference manual as has already been suggested.
esaleris: Could you take a look at the Fujitsu MVA screen and tell us if the SXGA+ screen is close. I guess I will order...
Caltrinity is absolutely correct. I looked at the MVA screens last week and it looks like a plasma screen. Hard to believe it is a TFT LCD screen.
How good are the Fujitsu laptops in other regards?
Moose great description of the XGA screen.
Any owner of an SXGA+ screen please post and tell us whether the DVD viewing experience is similar to moose's. This would help those that aer trying to decide which screen to order.
Thanks.
Thanks Mocca. Good to know that the SXGA+ screen is good. I wish I could see one. I will just have to order from IBM and try it. My only concern is the limited vertical viewing angles.
BTW The R40 was "silent". A faint whirr of the hard disk could be heard if you put your ear right next to the palm rest or right at the vent. Also a very gentle air flow sound at the PM vent. Sitting nornally in a quiet room of the house - the R40 was silent.
I looked at a R40 XGA screen today and watched a DVD briefly. It was difficult to set the screen so that the DVD was not "washed out". The vertical viewing angle is very limited - 10/15 degrees max? Is this true of the SXGA+ screen also?
I am seriously considering a Dell with an UltraSharp...
azazello: Have you played games on your 58U? Interested to know how the 1.3/4500/R9500 combination works with something like Splinter Cell? Do you like the resolution of the SXGA+ screen? Did you play games at 1040 or higher?
I have been following this topic closely and I am impressed with how the forum has worked on finding workarounds.
I am bothered by the advice to run the T40 in Laptop mode rather than Always On mode and to reduce the HW acceleration settings. I hope that this is not what IBM will recommend. Buy...
The Dell 600m does NOT have the UltraSharp display so if the T40 is similar to the 600m the T40 does not have +-50 degrees vertical viewing angle. Bummer!!!
I don't like the build quality on Dells. I used to have a C400 and had quite a few problems. The posts suggest problems with the T40 which I would really like to buy (buzzing, narrow viewing angles, flexing on LHS palmrest).
Any ideas on other laptops that I could consider?
Thanks.
