Gotchas for novice OC'ers

I had a pump fail on me once while doing many restart cycles while I was testing my hardware and resulted in a CPU temp of 92C. Thank God the Barton was dirt cheap and CPU's nowadays have throttling :D

What do you run as a daily overclock speed?

3.2ghz usually for the past year. My setup is completely capable of running at 3.8 all the time, but I noticed a drastic increase in heat dump. I run it faster over the winter months.

prime95 stable but bluescreens

Lower CPU multiplier and see if problem still occurs. If so, it's probably a memory or chipset issue.

Question about my E6400 over clock

I'm not familiar with your motherboard, however I assume it is a 965? Those chipsets have small querks with strap timings and ratios and you may actually be more stable at a front side bus frequency far greater than the previous most stable frequency. Are you able to adjust cpu multi's? What is...

PCIE CLOCK - Change or not to change

What's your motherboard? On older boards with no pci-e lock I found 108mhz set manually will allow ~250fsb overclock.

Anantech new cpu review is clearly second fiddle...

I think this review may have also been related to timing. I don't think very many people are interested in buying this processor at this point in time, so Anand may have been allocating more time in products that have more buyers or more hype. However, I do think the balance of this review...

Water Cooling question.

Did you make good contact with your cpu? Where is your rad located? You should always use a large high pressure fan at medium>low speeds for watercooling. Good shrouds improve temps by 2-3 degrees.

What exactly is shimmering?

You can't really take screenshots of it, but in source based games it is very apparent when AF is on w/ driver enabled optimizations. I fixed my shimmering by turning off the optimizations. It looks like a small rippling effect on walls and surfaces etc.. when you move your point of view. It...

"well" is very subjective. I overclocked my friend's X800XL to 460/1120. I consider that a well overclock, do you? The only downside is that the small stock heatsink couldn't really handle the chipset's heat. I'm sure with water and a volt mod, most X800XL's will overclock well. I'm sorry...

x800 xl or 6800GT?

Buy whichever is cheaper. I once made a decision based on the color of the pcb :D. I think you will be happy with the X800XL. If you do any sort of extreme cooling, you can use the $70 you saved to buy a waterblock and overclock!

Quietest 6800 Ultra

Not a Ultra, but definitely designed for silence. click EDIT: Most ultra's come with OEM style heatsink, and all sound alike. The gainward gs air solution is loud however.
