The only time WU is slow on my Windows 7 machines is on Patch Tuesday or immediately thereafter. It's not maxing out a core or thrashing the HDD/SDD. It's probably just waiting for the update servers to respond.
That said, even when it is running smoothly, it has never been as fast as it is in...
Same here. I've had the FF plugin disabled for many months now. It has been the sole reason for any hanging or lag in FF, and I'm sick of having to constantly update it. If I absolutely need flash, I'll open Chrome instead. I might as well uninstall the FF plugin at this point.
There's only one...
The answers forum is useless. Don't trust anything you read there unless it's directly from a MS engineer. The moderators are not always good sources of info, and there are several prolific posters who routinely post rumor-based opinions as if they were facts.
It's a shame that MS doesn't take...
It's very rare that I have an update fail, and usually a failed update works on the second try.
There was one earlier this year that failed to install repeatedly. It took some searching on many different fora to find the answer. It turns out that this particular update would fail to install if...
Doesn't surprise me. People are way too optimistic to expect a free license just for testing the preview.
But how is that going to work? If you're testing the preview, you would have had to install it over the top of an existing 7/8.1 install in order for MS to detect it. I imagine that many...
Your memory is a little hazy. The first Intel Macs in early 2006 had Core Duo (Yonah) CPUs:
MacBook
MacBook Pro
iMac
EDIT: Sorry, I may have misread your post a little. At first it seemed like you were saying that the first Intel Macs had C2D. If that's not what you meant, then I apologize...
On my home server (Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS) resolv.conf is automatically generated. In fact there is a comment at the top of the file that warns against editing it manually. Instead, my DNS server settings are in the /etc/network/interfaces file. In fact the man page (on Debian-based distros)...
Same here, mainly because most Linux DE's use categories.
That's a concept that Microsoft has ignored for way too long. Instead Windows either allows every program to create its own start menu folder (7 and older) or dumps everything in a huge list (8.x). What a mess! Sure you could create your...
I also ditched WHSv1 for Linux about three years ago. I had a failing storage drive that caused WHS to BSOD. A storage drive should not cause the whole system to crash! On top of that, WHS failed to detect any problems with the drive after rebooting.
I immediately dumped WHS for...
I've been using Switcher in Windows 7 for several years. It's very customizable (keyboard and mouse bindings, window layout, etc.) It hasn't been updated since 2007, but I've never had any problems with it.
I just tried it in 8.1 and it still works! :D I just had to change a couple of the...
Yes. And it has happened many, many times on this forum.
This forum is frequented by a few very vocal proponents of both platforms. Threads which had no connection to the AMD/Intel split sometimes derail into flame wars. Starting a thread specifically on the subject is a bad idea.
No offense...
Convenience and "official" support are why I got an S4 GPe. Both 4.3 and the subsequent update were available via OTA within a few weeks after the official releases. Not as fast as real Nexus updates, but close enough.
There is a bit of a problem with 4.3 on the GPe: Many apps lost the ability...
You know what? As soon as I posted that there is no LTE here, it suddenly appeared! I was on my way to class yesterday, and I noticed the LTE notification in the status bar.
I tested our new LTE a bunch of times while I was on campus yesterday and once just now at my house (1st result)...
I'm pretty sure that there is no LTE in my hometown yet. The status bar icon always shows either H or 3G.
The speed is high, but latency is still considerably high. Speed is good when downloading large files, but loading lots of small files (i.e. on a web page) can still take a while. On the...
Here's what HSPA on my unlimited plan gets me (using fast.t-mobile.com):
The screenshot shows 3G, but it was H when I ran the tests.
There's no LTE here yet. I did try LTE when I was in Chicago last month, but it only got 6782 down, 1386 up, and 75 ms at best. And that was at 3:37 AM.

AFAIK all retail chips are D2. D1 was ES only.
It's unfortunate that you got a bit of a dud chip. 4.4 GHz is not a bad overclock though.
I generally keep both of my 2600K chips at 4.5, but I drop the one in my home server down to 4.3 during the summer since it's air cooled (and running...
With SB it was common to find a hard frequency limit that couldn't be passed even with lots of additional Vcore. The solution was to enable CPU PLL Overvoltage.
On my Gigabyte P67A-UD7 board, I had to turn it on to get past 4.7 GHz. I was able to get it stable at 5 GHz, but it took more Vcore...
That's your VID, not the actual Vcore. Scroll down to see the reading.
It's also strange that the VID didn't change at all when changing frequencies. Are you running at a fixed Vcore? I suspect that your monitoring program (HWiNFO64?) is not reading the value correctly. Haswell just came out...
I was holding out for a 32GB version from T-Mobile, but there has been almost no indication of when or even if they'll ever sell it. Instead I'll gladly settle for 16GB w/stock Android directly from Google.
It's going to be a long six week wait... :\
Are you only looking at the temps in BIOS? The CPU is not idle at that point. Boot into Windows and check your temps there.
Also, idle temps don't really mean much. You're right about them being inaccurate; I've seen mine drop below ambient before. What's important is load temps. Load up...
Most of the time when you try to correct him he simply doesn't respond. When he does respond, he sometimes throws a tantrum.
I wouldn't mind his nonsensical posts if that was all they were. They become a big problem when he offers horrible advice to people who don't know about his track record.
That's a dangerously high offset. That means that 0.35 V will be added to the VID (the voltage that the CPU requests from the MB based on the current operating conditions). For example if your VID is 1.35 V under load, you will get 1.70 V (+/- some based on LLC settings) on the CPU!
The...
This. Diminishing returns for increasing rad size set in very quickly.
Also, having many fans does not mean a lot of noise. With my 3x140mm NB fans turned down to about 900 rpm, they are drowned out by the GPU fan and HDD noise. I don't even really need to turn them up under load (i.e...
Something is wrong with your LinX. You should be getting 100+ Gflops and much higher temps. You have to make sure you have the latest Linpack. Go here and grab the one that says "new library" next to it.
As you can see the results are quite close. My guess is that each gui passes slightly...
I'm pretty sure that the Asus P8Z77-WS has a bridge chip of some sort. I don't know if it's an NF200 though.
Like Grooveriding said, If you really need more PCIe lanes, then you should be considering the X79 platform.
Yep. I picked up another 2600K along with a GB Z77X-UD5H... the day before the sale started! Talk about bad timing! :\ Fortunately MC agreed to refund/credit the difference.
So far this new chip/MB combo is doing great. I don't know if it's due to the improved VRM's or just a better 2600K, but...
