    Printer Connection

Greetings. I'm working on an older laptop running Windows 98. The printer is a HP Deskjet connected via the parallel port. When trying to print from Word or any other program, you get the error that Windows was unable to print and brings up the generic troubleshooting (check plugs, power...

Host web site at home with dynamic ip

I've never heard of registering a domain for free, so you're pretty much out 10 bucks a year. Other than that, look at the link Jack provided and see what fits your needs.

    Ownership of a file

...so you've checked the open files listing on the server from Computer Management > Shared Folders > Open Files ? As far as taking control of a file, someone with administrator access could take ownership of the file and then change the permissions to allow them to delete the file.

    Active Directory Question

As far as a subdomain, the admin of company.com will always have control fo subset.company.com. If you think about it, it's foolish for them not to. It really depends on what kind of control you don't want the other admins to have on your network, and what access you need to their network...

network traffic when using both wired & wireless

Essentially, separate because you are talking two different desitations. The router is going to direct the traffic from your laptop to the outside world, and from the xbox to the video server. NOw, let's say you were doing XBox live and using the laptop, then you would be sharing the bandwith...

Mapping an XP drive with win2k

Hmm. Never experienced a setup like that, so I don't know. If you don't want the XP Home machine to require a password, try setting one up and then use userpassswords2 for an automatic login. From the 2K machine, try connecting using the password you created.

why would I Not be able to get onto a website at work that everyone else can?

Page not found, or site not found? I'd clear the IE cache. If the site is not found, check the DNS settings.

Unsernv problem on users trying to log on to domain

This happens for any user that logs into that machine, or just a specific one? If it's specific to one user, I'd log in with an admin account, and rename the offending profile. Have the user log back in and see what happens. Then pull anything needed from the old profile.

Broadband connection goes down w/ inactivity

I assume you are getting an IP address from your router. Check the DHCP configuration lease time. If the lease is set really low, I've seen problems like you describe. I would also check for the latest firmware for your router -- my D-Link DI-524 had issues, though only on the wireless side...

    Paralyzed disk access

Is the HD making any new noises? Or louder than normal? It may be going out. I'd also check the DMA settings. I had a machine that for some reason switched to PIO mode instead of DMA -- despite "Use DMA if available" being the selected option. I had to remove the device in device manager...

    DNS Server System Log entries

It allows you to lookup addresses by IP and resove that to a name (just the reverse of "normal" DNS). If you're running a small network the setup is painless and takes about 10 seconds. If you are on a large network with multiple DNS servers, multiple IP address classes and domains -- it...

    Windows Small Business Server 2003

I don't know about other dynamic IP programs, but if you use DNS2Go it might do what you want, depends on your hosting company. If your hosting company will allow you to access your website through their DNS record, say www.hostingco.com/martyn365, then it should work. There are other IP...

Internet takes a long time to start working.

I don't know how much you have going on with your PC -- and from your sig, you have a nice PC, or what operating system you are running. Let's assume its XP Pro. I'm inclined to agree with Fardringle above. When you start your PC, and you get the prompt to login, notice that your HD light is...

help! dlink di-514 rev. b acting up.

If it can't find a site, that sounds like a DNS issue. When you run an ipconfig /all on the PCs, do they have an address that falls into the scope of the router (say a 192.168.0.x) ? ...and is the DNS server listed as the router (say 192.168.0.1) ? I suspect that it does not. This would...

If two nics exist, can a service be only accessable on one and not the other?

To maintain available bandwidth for the primary network, you could add a second NIC to all the machines to be backed up (on their own subnet) and have those all connected to a dedicated switch along with the backup server. If security is the big issue, you can do the same but with a filtering...

    DSL modem or router?

The modem is what translates the signal from the DSL company into something you can use. A router would allow multiple computers to share that one internet connection. Microsoft Genuine Advantage Cracked In 24 Hours

I think Microsoft isn't really trying to stop dedicated "pirates", they know that those people will find ways around it. I agree with Bond, even if you aren't planning to use wireless now, doesn't mean you won't in the future. WHat's the cost difference, like 5 bucks maybe? I own a 524, and had lots of problems with it on the wireless side. Machines would connect just fine one day, and then the next day would...

You can't. If there is not going to be a dedicated internet connection to your server, it can not host a website. For that you would need to seek external hosting. ... oh, and by internet connection, I'm not talking about a standard 1.5/128 internet connection. You can't run more than a few...

Hmm. A better place to start might be to ask what you are using now? You and the bosses will have to decide how important these pieces are to your overall business.
