Linux Distro for Old Laptop

As a sidenote, on my own Powerbook G3 233mhz, I'm running Yellow Dog Linux and I couldn't be happier with it. I originally installed it because it's the only distro that adequately supports the Powerbook hardware out-of-the-box, but i found that it's actually more pleasant to install...

Dude. __HD install__. I'm not talking about trying out Linux either - you boot from the live-CD then run a simple installer to copy the preconfigured distro to the disk, and voila... a lightweight Debian GUI install with minimal effort. See here.

Looking for a good Linux distro...

Here's another recommendation for SuSE - of all the desktop RPM-based distros, I think its easily the best. Mandrake 9.1 as an overall product left me a bit disappointed... easy to install, sure, but I just dont like the setup of the packages. I was always fighting it in some way or another...

Yuck. Try the Morphix LightGUI CD. Sounds like exactly what you want. Morphix is a pre-configured Debian Live-CD distro... it will boot right off the CD, autodetect your hardware, and drop you into a usable GUI immediately - you can do an HD install from there if you like it. Just like...

As an alternative to the DOS suggestion, you could always try booting from a Morphix Linux Live CD and see if the Linux IDE/NTFS code might be able to handle the drive.

Nah, what I'm suggesting is that the power supply created a surge or spike in voltage that may have caused the components to fail. Maybe it was just a bad capacitor, I dont know, but I would be wary of trusting components to that power supply. Dell, unfortunately, have their own proprietary PS...

NEED LINUX HELP! (rh9) CD not working properly

With what program? For XMMS, you need to download the AudioCD Reader plugin and install it... then disable the old CD Audo Player plugin and configure AudioCD Reader to read digital audio. Simple, really - I wonder why distros don't just include AudioCD by default with XMMS instead.

Which one is faster?

It probably depends on the task. The Athlon 900 is a faster chip, but it's working with 133mhz memory as opposed to 200mhz with the Duron. They're definately only within a few percentage points of one another, but if I had to guess I'd say the Duron would edge out the Athlon system by a couple...

I agree with the above suggestion to build two seperate systems... with a single computer, you're stuck either trying to get all the apps/games you want to run on Linux or struggling to make a Microsoft product work as a decent server OS. Neither is pretty.

Carmack speaks on Hl2

Am I reading the same quote as the rest of you guys? Carmack basically states that the FX is far slower than the Radeon running default DX9 shader code, but becomes competitive if the code is customized to run with lower precision. Obviously this isn't optimal, but it's a hell of a lot better...

You could get a VIA Eden Mini-ITX system and a KVM switch pretty cheap... do all your downloading and file serving and whatnot on the VIA, and put your main desktop on standby mode when not in use. An Eden + 5,400rpm drive would be fanless, noiseless, and quite low-power... thats the best...

I just dealt with the _exact_ same issue a week or so ago. I'm not sure if i can recall exactly how i fixed it, but the one thing i can absolutely tell you is that the problem lies with the drivers for the USB adapter. Here's what i think i did... 1. Go to linksys.com and grab the device...

Doh! I slowly killed my video card. Now what to do?

The good news is that the P3 1ghz is still fetching around $70 on EBay, enough to cover an NForce2 mobo... the RAM is probably worth $80-$100... enough to cover 512mb PC2700... the board is maybe $15, if you can sell it at all :P. An Athlon XP 1700+ OEM, Speeze FalconRock II, and Radeon 9100...

What 9800Pro VGA cooler do you guys recommend?

hmm... what about combining the Zalman ZM50-HP with two of the 60x15mm fans at SVC? You might not even have to sacrifice a PCI slot that way, its under $30, and it'd surely outpreform the Vantec (heatsink area probably four times as large, 44cfm vs. 5.9cfm :Q).
