any Cisco qos experts?

your access list is wrong. It uses wildcards (think of it as inverted mask). And capitalization matters on classmap name. Also, you want to use priority instead of bandwidth. You should also probably stick a class default in with WFQ.

Backing up Cisco RTR Configs

Better answer - Use SNMP to make the router transfer its running config to a tftp server. No need for nasty telnet based scripts. The OID you need to make the magic happen is: .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.2.1.55.$IPADDR s <filenamedestination>

Anyone familiar with tone generators?

If you have a managed switch, you can always compare the mac address forwarding table to the PCs on the other side. Find the PC's mac address, look for the mac in the switch and wa-la. You now know which PC is in which port.

What's interesting is that mail can't be delivered from the internet to .8... Its not allowed. It has to be delivered to .7. The access list says so. The way it works is that the access group ties an access list to a interface and filters traffic from an inbound perspective. The statics...

The access group is what applies the access list to an interface. Do you see the word "conduit" in your config anywhere, and are you running a recent version of pix code? I'm assuming this is a two interface pix...

Not the access-list, the access-group. But you're obviously getting mail in... Does your mailserver have more than 1 IP on it? The reason you're getting the error "No PTR record for <x.x.x.14>, rejecting" is because the pix isn't catching the internal mailserver IP and tying it to .8...

Okay party people. I'm making some assumptions here since you didn't post your access-groups for the outside interface. But... You need to use a STATIC for the mail server. You tie the .8 address to the inside IP. You do still want it natted, otherwise the pix will just pass the private...

Another fun fact on auto mdix - it will not work when you have a port hard coded for speed and/or duplex. And there are line cards that will do auto mdix in the 4500 series. I know for a fact that the WS-X4548-GB-RJ45 modules do that voodoo.

Recommend me a middle to high-end router

The 1600 and 2500 series routers are getting dropped after the 12.3 codetrain. It looks like the 1700 series is going to make it to at least 12.4. If you're going to be getting into the Cisco stuff, go with a 2600/2600XM router. Those will do pretty much everything that their big brothers...

Obviously you've never misconfigured AAA. :P If you have the con0 or vty's set wrong, its possible to just get a password prompt and it STILL won't work (read the line password). Its a pretty neat trick if you want to be mean/screw over someone...

This is no different than the folks who have done SDSL over "dry copper". Apparently the easiest way to get this provisioned is to get a alarm monitoring circuit between the two sites. Then get your own SDSL modems and away you go... What you should google for is "homebrew sdsl".

cisco Router series 800 - model 878

Okay cmetz, you keep talking about how buggy the ISR routers are. I've been deploying them as well, but haven't seen anything out of the ordinary as compared to the 2600/3600 series. They run IOS. Standard codetrains of IOS, not special weirdo forks. I've been pretty happy with them...

I've been rolling out 2801 and 2821 routers recently and haven't had too much in the way of problems. Since the 2600 series is effectively dead, I can't see any reason to invest capital into a dead platform. You don't really need a 2821 for what you've described. A 2801 or 2811 would more...

Well... There's no such thing as a free lunch. The reason these things are cheap is because they come preloaded with System 10.3. And Apple doesn't give a crap. So if you're looking for Tiger, you have to front the $130 for the upgrade! There may be possibilities for PM to Compusa however...

cisco 2916 switch question

Unfortunately for you, your 2916XM does not support trunking unless you have a module installed that does support trunking. I see you have 18 interfaces, what are the other two? There should be a part number silk screened on the front of the module.

Semo - Quick question on your 2916XL. How much flash memory capacity does it have, and what version IOS is it running? If I recall correctly, the 2916XL series never made it to the 8mb flash version of IOS. Meaning it couldn't run 12.0, and didn't support ISL/802.1q natively.

Sharing T1 with other offices

Sure, buy a Cisco 1841 with an integrated T-1 Wic card. You can easily control your NAT statements to tie certain IPs to certain private network ranges. You can also do QoS and rate limit. The real question is what do you gain by going to the T-1 that you can't do with DSL?

Where can I get some muxing equipment

ScottMac - Have you ever used the Quick Eagle/Digital Link equipment? The DL3800 has always seemed to perform well. I've never had the pleasure of dealing with a Larscomm imux. As for ATM imux... Who wants to pay the cell tax if you don't have to?

You are looking for this. Nice equipment, does the trick. I've never used this but I imagine it would also work. Adtran also makes T-1 multiplexing equipment. Depending on your needs, you might also be able to just do Multilink PPP on a router without a hardware multiplexor. I would advise...

How fast is a T3 connection?

The OC-3 is actually 84 T-1s (3 T3s * 28). There's tons of overhead in OC-3 frames in order to deal with the payload mapping since the T-carrier structure isn't actually syncronous.

Question about cisco VTP

Instead of the 37xx series, you should consider the 28xx/38xx series. It gives you more power and expansion options at the same or lower prices. Depending on your needs, you could more than likely get away with using a 28xx series in place of the 3745.

Good ethernet router

If its the same box as this one then it should do routing and NAT. Besides those capabilities, what more do you need? If you have a firewall that you plan on connecting, you can just plug the firewall directly into that box.
