oh my god... hell has frozen over. creative put optical out on one of their soundcards (without requiring a breakout box)? I've been waiting for 6 years for this!!!

How do you use optical digital audio out??

should just be a mini-toslink jack. some cables come with these thin pointy end adapters. that should do it I think.

I'm personally kind of surprised how much grief people give kit lenses. I bought a d50 and the kit lens has served me pretty well so far. I did order an 18-70mm to swap in for a little more versatility, but I didn't really feel I was missing photos or getting unsatisfactory results with the kit...

I'm moving to the dark side....

The new core duo imacs had very responsive interfaces. Much more than i recall using even some desktop G5s. Seems like the new architecture really beefed up the feedback and how snappy the OS seems.

How do you fry eggs in a stainless steel pan?

word on cast iron. absolutely nothing fries an egg like a cast iron pan, and I'm a cuisinart multiclad stainless steel set owner. non-stick pans are ass for eggs. the texture of the egg is just wrong.

My Dell 2005FPW just died! :(

My friend's 2005fpw died 1.5 months after he bought it. Had a replacement the next day that was perfect. no dead pixels, no backlight problems.

Best way to cook steak without a grill or broiler?

I heat the sh1t out of a cast iron pan, oil then salt and pepper my steak (kosher and fresh ground) which has warmed to room temp, and hit the pan for about a minute a side. But I eat my steak blue. An hour in the oven at 400F sounds like I'd throw it out after.

why are MM speakers so ugly these days? Altec's new cs21 looks like a nice return to simple and clean. But I think I'll have to pass on all these and just use a 2.0 bookshelf speaker setup instead. Tom's speaker reviews suck. Where are the subjective tests? Listening results? A graph doesn't...

Thing is, without spending the time to tweak the system, the cards are hardly different. having to add a headphone amp in makes even less sense. Sound is totally subjective, which is why a revo or any other high end card might not be worth the hassle for many people. I love high quality sound...

Cast Iron cookware

cast iron can be heated to a much higher temperature and will retain heat better. If you're going to brown meat, cast iron is the way to go. When I can't put a steak on a hot grill, I heat my cast iron until it smokes and lay down the meat for a minute on each side.

top gun was shot in super35, which uses a 4:3 ratio. for theatrical, they pretty much just frame it as 1.85 or whatever the ratio was. that said, I can't wait for the re-release. gayest yet best movie evar.

Building a new Photoshop system - need input!

I'm surprised by LCD use for design as well. CRTs are still more accurate (as well as cheaper). as has been mentioned, ditch the ti4200 for a matrox g550. simple, cheap, but a strong 2D performer even today
