Future guns, what's after the Rail Gun in terms of projectiles?

Thank you for that answer! I understand what your saying now :) So how does the rail gun provide the forward pulse? My guess is when you discharge the energy into the magnets it starts at one and and ends up at the other simply by it taking time for the electrons to move to the end of the...

Whats the power required to get something the size of a bb to the speed of light?

Yeah the bb is the aliens clown car :) I didn't know this topic was beaten to death, so some of the replies were somewhat uncalled for but oh well it's a forum and the internet so I don't really care. I guess I am more upset that there is not a way to travel to different universes than I am at...

Whats the power required to get something the size of a bb to the speed of light?

My mind doesn't like the fact of what is being said, that man will never, ever travel faster than light.. s in saying we already see the limit of just how fast we can go, and all of you are saying we will never even get close to that limit. It just doesn't seem right. Laws or no laws. But...

Whats the power required to get something the size of a bb to the speed of light?

People like you disgust me. Go away. Some of you people have no sense of vision. This forum is Highly Technical is it not? So I never went through a class that was open enough to ask things like this... I asked a simple question, if something smaller like a grain of salt can get up to the...

Whats the power required to get something the size of a bb to the speed of light?

So if it increases in mass... then the Enterprise would have weighed like a galaxy at warp 9?

Whats the power required to get something the size of a bb to the speed of light?

Short answers don't interest me ;) I want to see some proof! Then how close could it get on what amount of power? By the way, I do think someone at some point will surpass the speed of light in travel, just never close in our life times.. however there HAS to be a way.. saying it is...

Future guns, what's after the Rail Gun in terms of projectiles?

However, since this is a magnetic pulse, could the back of the barrel be left open and the recoil motion would simply be air being shot out the back end of it? What is receiving the reverse force in a rail gun? The air in the barrel? So your saying if you set up a rail gun with a big enough...

Whats the power required to get something the size of a bb to the speed of light?

Everyone assumes Aliens would need these giant doomsday ships to travel around.. however, people forget they could actually be really really small. Lets say a ship was the size of a bb to transport 100,000 alien dudes. How much energy would be required to get it to the speed of light, or damn...

Future guns, what's after the Rail Gun in terms of projectiles?

I just fail to see where the reverse force in a rail gun is.. since a magnetic wave is pushing the projectile out of the barrel. Wouldn't the opposite force be a sideways force on the barrel it'self and not a reverse motion as with conventional munitions?

Future guns, what's after the Rail Gun in terms of projectiles?

So why doesn't the rail gun in the link move when fired?

Future guns, what's after the Rail Gun in terms of projectiles?

When the rail gun at the link I provided is fired in the video, there is no recoil. The gun doesn't flinch at all. This was my basis for my conclusion. This is perhaps due, as you said the size of the projectile. BUT, let me offer this.. since it is a magnetic discharge, your telling me that...

Future guns, what's after the Rail Gun in terms of projectiles?

Incorrect, there is no recoil on a Rail Gun as it is pushing the projectile out of the chamber using magnetics and there is no recoil effect... all of the 'recoil' is basically being put INTO the projectile, repelling it out of the chamber. As for the question on it not being timed right and...

Future guns, what's after the Rail Gun in terms of projectiles?

You could reverse your sig, of course, with the current setup on Rail Guns, you can't go running around the streets with one. The most compact one I have seen is at the link in my first post.. however that is 40 some lbs. and you have to recharge it after each shot... But some of these guns...

Future guns, what's after the Rail Gun in terms of projectiles?

This is a link to a rail gun... The Rail Gun is nowhere's near perfected and ready for battle use, however the velocities you can get a smaller projectile to go make sit as destructive as a larger slower traveling conventional round. Even though the Rail Gun is in development, what other...

1/4mile high Trebuchet, 1/2 mile long boom, 1000lb ball, how much distance?

Yeah! That's kind of where I got the idea. There was a show on TLC a long time ago about a guy with a real large wooden Trebuchet and he chucked a car, washing machine, flaming piano, and the coolest of all, a dead cow over 1/4 mile. AWESOME I'd like my above trebuchet to throw a dead cow...

1/4mile high Trebuchet, 1/2 mile long boom, 1000lb ball, how much distance?

If I am ambitious enough tonight I will render out a mockup in 3d studio max tonight. Lets add this bonus. 3 second burn solid rocket boosters to get the weight moving toward the ground faster.

1/4mile high Trebuchet, 1/2 mile long boom, 1000lb ball, how much distance?

The boom weighs 25 ton built of high strenght light weight material.

1/4mile high Trebuchet, 1/2 mile long boom, 1000lb ball, how much distance?

Well I would like the boom where the projectile is located to be almost touching the ground, so this would give our counterweight a hight of over 1/4 mile in the air, roughly about 600m off the ground as previously stated. Yes, this is all considering a lossless build. From what I have seen...

1/4mile high Trebuchet, 1/2 mile long boom, 1000lb ball, how much distance?

Say, it pivots 1/3rd of the way away from the weights. The weights are not really known, but for something that larg, lets go with 10,000 ton.

1/4mile high Trebuchet, 1/2 mile long boom, 1000lb ball, how much distance?

I love the Trebuchet.. such raw destruction! Figuring you were able to build an A frame 1/4 mile high supporting a reinforced 1/2 mile long boom with X amount of counter weight throwing a 1000lb. cannon ball... Just how far would it go? How fast would it be traveling? I was never good at...

'Outside the box' ways to generate electricity....

This is a great discussion! I like the ideas and thoughts coming out in this thread. It is neat to see that some of these ideas ARE being implimented in some form or another around the world. What I am starting to see is that there are SOOOO many ways for us to generate electricity from the...

'Outside the box' ways to generate electricity....

I'm sure fish work their way into hydroelectric systems as well... so the issue with the birds is kind of moot. Some awesome ideas in here! I really like that link posted to the power being generated from the currents! There are tons of ways we could generate electricity, finding the big ones...

    perpetual motion machines

Idea. What if the road way this 'efficient car system' was driving on was a giant magnet? If the wheels were magnets also or had say metal coils within them, could the magnetic field the car would be driving through be used to obtain more energy somehow? If the tired itself was tightly wound...

    perpetual motion machines

Not a problem! I understood what you were after :) All I'm saying is not just me, but a lot of people with a logical state of mind would think the lighbulb/solar pannel idea to work. I know you can't 'make' energy now. And as you said you can't extract more energy than you put into a given...

    perpetual motion machines

Allow me to counter, A semi drives under a bridge and gets stuck because it is too tall. Tons of engineers and local officials come out to try to solve how the heck they are going to get it out from under the bridge. Hours pass and no ideas and they are ready to break the bridge appart to get...

'Outside the box' ways to generate electricity....

What are your ideas? I just had this thought.... Could we not build giant 'paddle wheels' per se' out in the oceans where the currents are strongest? This would look like a swing set, you have the main cross bar and then an A frame on each side that is anchored into the the bed of the ocean...

    perpetual motion machines

Yup, I always had the idea for the Generator to power the motor and the motor to in turn power the Generator. I do see now that it could never susstain it'self forever, but, how long could it last? Would it not spin at all? Would it slowly decrease in speed over X amount of time? Like if you...

How can 802.11 and phones etc go through walls?

This still confuses me though: "At those frequencies concrete is more or less tranparant to electromagnetic radiation" WHY? Isn't that 'matter' going though 'matter' or am I not in the right thinking? Maybe I should have asked how radiation works :)

    perpetual motion machines

I am starting to pick up on the whole problems with a perpetual motion machine so this thread is great! However, I think the persuit of a machine capable of using 'energy' much more efficiently for longer time would be great! I always had this idea.. what if you had a generator, and an...

How can 802.11 and phones etc go through walls?

I had asked a different question and found the answer so this is an edit :P But something I was always curious about how these things can work through walls. I mean, why does a solid block of concrete not stop the signal? How does it actually go through the wall? :)
