netsh.exe on xp and w2k will do this. you can then easily make a batch file for him to click or to have it launch at startup. http://support.microsoft.com/d...x?scid=kb;en-us;242468

Having trouble accessing internet

are you going router -> pc -> switch -> 2nd computer or are you going router -> switch -> computers or even router -> switch(-> 2nd computer) + pc where your router has mulitple lan ports? and did you try using the lan check mark not directly connect to internet?

Yes you can. Its called a dry line, and it seems to be becoming an option from more dsl carriers now.

i've tried switching every possible variable. knoppix on the machine doesnt even work. i even take out the router and connect direct to the modem. still no luck. it sucks.

Agreed, we get these posts all the time. You really need to be careful what you volunteer to do for friends in a corporate environment. Charge whatever you and friend want. just make sure you cover your butt. You'll need to read up on any codes that are applicable to yoru area. Jsut remember...

You should be fine. Unless you want to run the cable threw ductwork, then i think you usually ahve to go plenum. if you want to you can always check the codes in your town.

dont, do this, dont do this at all. i think if you allow him to remote desktop into your computer, he can gain the share access to the printer. sharing printers over the internet is a bad bad idea.

actually according to that screen shot, I would say you can forward these ports. "Add Custom Service" I bet it will then ask you for a service name, a start port, a end port, and the ip address it resides on.

youc an do a whois search on the ip, and get it tracked down to an ISP, beyond that, good luck. dsl reports has a whos is interface to use.

your router doesnt ahve a firewall in it? if it does, use that. leave AV on each machine to inspect incoming(and outgoing) files.

will this network configuration work?

i believe playign xbox games against each other, yous till go out to the internet through a central server ( anyone know a REAL answer to this) so the 108 mbps probably won't impact that. all three of those coudl be from a different manufacturer. I am nto sure about the bridges though...

does all wireless hardware stink?

i bought a buffalo router and card. got it workign no problem, and it suits my laptop needs fine. I can go form the living room couch to the bedroom without dropping connection. this is exactly what I wanted it for. topping out at 54 mbps is nto too shabby either considering my wired hosue is...

that gets much more complicated. you can look into vpn, but thats probably more work than yo uneed. if you just want info form him, then look into ftp.

wont this not work becasue it needs to be port 25 to accept mail? and isnt that not the problem at hand? aren't most of the email programs unable to switch what port to contact the smtp server on?

hahah, yep that would do it. its always nice to use the right ips. lol. you should look into a dynamic ip service so you can connect to mydomain.com:5901 instead of x.x.x.x:5901. just a thought

3 Public IP's...

you can just go, modem->switch then in the swtich connect the 2 servers and a router which has all other pcs behind it. piece of cake. but then again if you only have 1 webserver and 1 email server then you only really need 1 ip address, and might not have to pay for the 3 ip addressess.

i remember there being a problem when i did this. i think because it still uses other ports. so pretty much i am useless to answer this question. i think you may need to forward other ports too.
