Good point with Windows, I thought I knew the difference but apparently I'm a sucker for professional lingo. If you don't trust EVGA who would you choose for a mobo? I might not be buying this rig in time for the discount so it is worth considering other alternatives. Would you go with Asus...

Do you have anything in particular against the EVGA board (or reason to choose the GigaByte instead)? After rebate the EVGA is only $109 ($100 off), so if it's merely a matter of cost I am willing to pay a little more for peace of mind and a few shiny additions. I just checked my NewEgg...

Interesting idea with the partially redundant backup... he does have about 3 TB of external drives right now, perhaps the solution would be to have two 2 TB drives mirror each other and a third do nightly backups on the externals. Seems kinda ghetto but those externals do exist and it'd be like...

Regarding that... does his laptop's mobo affect how much memory it can handle through an ESATA expansion card? Or is it handled like most external drives handle USB (where it's irrelevant)? Sorry for asking this so many times, I just haven't got a clear answer yet.

I'm rather concerned/ curious about what CurseTheSky said about 2 TB drives being more failure-prone. Anyone have numbers on this? % increase in fails, % difference in lifespan, etc.?

Haha, yeah of course it's 5 TB :) You can easily shoot 5 GB in a single session, if not 10 or 20. Could you give me some more info about ZFS? Thanks again for all of your responses guys, this has been very informative! :)

I like the idea of that box... it's not as elegant, as, say a server that will handle all the RAID stuff for you, but you could at least use it as a central location for a ton of storage and do redundant back-ups manually or on a schedule to other disks / devices. I realize he could lose things...

Well, for starters, I tried the G.SKILL PDF settings and it doesn't work for 4 sticks. Gah :( Windows 7 is already installed, and it POST's just fine. It's in the glowing Windows loading logo that it gets stuck. And by "getting stuck" the animation is still going, it just never loads Windows...

Hey dudes, I set it to 800 and still no good. Tried 800 and boosted the voltage +0.1, no good. Only thing left is the +0.3v and northbridge + 0.1v... Any other ideas? Thanks so much for the responses so far. I hope I don't have to return these modules :(

Nope! :( I'll try boost it +0.3v when I get home. I read somewhere that sometimes you have to boost the chipset voltage as well. Sound about right? Or nay?

Well would'ja believe it, my computer has arisen from the dead. However, my X-FI Gamer doesn't work anymore. It can't find the driver even though it was already installed... and still when it was re-installed. Hmmm.

I didn't realize that memory was that picky as long as you matched pins, type, supported speed, chipset support, etc. Maybe it isn't? I guess this will be a lesson either way. I didn't even think to check the chipset support in the memory specs, which makes me feel pretty foolish. But luckily...

Yeah, I'm taking a little risk. I mean they only have 10 DDR2-1066 models on there, it's kind of ridiculous. I'd be surprised if support was that weak. Do you think it's really something to worry about that much? That's the wrong QVL, too. I've got the GA-P35-DS3R. Link Memory modules...
