Linksys trouble

go to start --> run and type in ipconfig /all if you connect your machine directly to the router, can you go online? if not, then something is wrong with your router configuration. some ISP's require you to hardcode the IP, etc. into your router. otherwise go back through your laptop...

Thinking of doing a home network

yeah...about the directional antenna...you don't need it. in my apt in SF i usually get something like 5 different wireless signals (most between 40-70%) from surrounding apartments. these are probably going across multiple walls and/or floors. if you only have desktops and aren't planning...

internet connection issues - can connect with laptop, but not desktop

yes, make sure that the network card in the desktop is enabled. sometimes it becomes disabled. you may also want to update the drivers if it is really old (download off web using laptop, move it to a jump drive, install on desktop)

DHCP Troubles

to me it sounds like spysweeper removed something that was necessary for your ethernet card to work (it does happen). most of these programs do have an undo/restore function, so you might want to try going through the log and finding out what's missing. good luck.

Type of cable modem - does it matter?

no, it shouldn't matter what type of cable modem you have. and yes, you should check with comcast for their modem list if you think it's that important. many ISP's have proprietary modems that are configured specifically for their network and won't work on others. others require that modems...

Yes, it sounds like you should. It doesn't sound like your computer realizes it's online at all, and yeah, the "skynet ppoe" option shouldn't be selected in the Public Network screen since you're already wired in.

Repeater questions.

uh, repeaters only help a little bit. they are only as fast as whatever weak signal is there. it's more or less the same as putting a 100mb router in front of a 56k modem line. your speed will not be any faster than 56k.

Dlink router and laptop problem

Yes, this is normal. The way D-Links (and some other wireless things, esp the built in ones) work is that they scan and pick up the strongest signal every time. Being wired in is a bit different of course - you don't have a choice of routers then, eh?

Best way to setup VPN network? (small office)

My understanding is that the SonicWall routers establish a single 'permanent' VPN connection, and everyone in the office can log on just like a LAN. This makes sense, but is it the best, most reliable solution out there?

Any other Hotmail Plus customers out there?

mine was upgraded to 250mb a long time ago (2-3 months?) and i haven't had any problems. if you're going to pay for email, i'd recommend mailsnare.net. great service, never had a question that wasn't answered within 3-4 hours, and the price is right. :)

I posted a while ago here about our problems with email/VPN, and we did go with a new provider (sonic.net) which has been better. That was a great suggestion. However, we are still having VPN issues, and this has wasted quite a few hours/days for everyone here in our SF office...

well, it sounds like it *was* a provider issue. it doesn't sound like they are too thrilled about changing providers or switching the config, and it went down for about an hour yesterday too, haha. i guess i will wait for our tech consultants to do an analysis and make a rec since management...

We do already have this. It works alright, but there are quite a few reasons why people prefer to use regular Outlook instead (attachments take longer as mentioned, difficulty syncing with Palms, 'you have new mail' notification instead of email blurb, different option settings - people have to...

Question about wireless router

Ditto. My wireless router does handle the 'my network' capabilities you're talking about. Works fine on both Linksys and D-link routers for me.

yes, i agree that we should not have connectivity problems at all - i can understand when our own hardware goes down, but access to the internet should never be an issue. thanks for the advice - i'll see if there is something we can do to ensure connectivity first.

have you unplugged everything from your router? this will isolate your linksys box to make sure that you're not hitting something else for some reason. take out the 'internet' plug from the back, and plug your computer into one of the 1,2,3,4 slots (doesn't matter which one). see if you can...

are those laptop coolers any good?

yeah, i like 'em, got two of the antec ones, and they seem to make a difference. both laptops don't run as hot, and they're not too loud either. i guess you gotta try it out yourself. not everyone likes the antec ones, and you'll see the same thing for any given brand.

Asian people - I need advice

eh, i say do yourself a favor and don't take her to any more family events...they're uncomfortable, and i'm sure she is too. it sounds ridiculous to have to keep your life with her separate from the rest of your family, but sometimes that's what you need to do. if it's already been six years...
