Communication speed of wireless to wired signals? (eg mice)

A signal by wire is sent straight to the computer. A wireless signal is converted to air and then sent to the computer. Because of such "lag", a wired connection will always be speedier.

It seems every week there is an awesome ad sale there. Also compared to other computer, electronic, appliance stores, Fry's is HUGE. So much selection. Sure its not always as cheap as Newegg, but its a local place to get something right when you need it.

My first Hot Deal post and I think its pretty huge. Fry's Electronics is opening a store in the Chicago suburb of Downers Grove, IL. Near the corner of Finley and Butterfield right off the I-355 tollway. Savaging through Fry's website shows nothing, but it is certain that the store is there...

Air Can rebate

This isn't technical support, but if the rebate asks for a copy of the upc, it's fine. Otherwise, I am pretty sure the upc isn't painted onto the can, so careful work with a razor should pull that upc wrapper off. DO NOT puncture the can. Otherwise you can say goodbye to your fingers.

DIVX discs

Odds are they are no good anymore. Once the disk has been played once, the data on the disc would decay rapidly. You had at most a week to watch the movie. Sorry.

Need to boost game performance

Ping times are affected mainly by the connection. Its likely the server you are trying to play on is not in your best interest to play there. If this is a close server though, you can optimzie your local connection. You could try a different NIC. If you are using router try another one or try...

How to install Windows 98 on a notebook pc which can have either the floppy or the CD ROM but not both?

But of course you can copy the contents of a floppy boot disk with cdrom drivers to the hard drive. You can search google for an acceptable bootdisk image.

Trying to disable the touch pad on my Laptop (Seanote)

Well I suppose you can find it in the Device Manager and disable it. Don't delete it otherwise it will just reinstall on your next reboot.

AMD64 confusion

Athlon 64 FX is at 940pins now, but will migrate to a 939 design in the future. As far as I know Athlon 64's will stay with the 754 pin design.

ATA 100 when it should be ATA 133?

Only Maxtor makes ATA133 drives. Its probably reporting what as it should. Don't worry about ATA133 anyways. The performance between 100 and 133 is not noticeable, not even in benchmarks.

Its hard to tell from the limited info you provided. Its very possible it won't work and at the same time very possible it can work. Make sure you can return it or trade it in for a different module.

Those are some interesting things to try. I hope you try them out and then report back to this forum. I am really interested in the results. BTW I am certain a camera won't work as a floppy device, but a flash carder reader probably would work.

Is this a 2.3GHz machine or a 1.6GHz computer?

As a partial OEM, when a machine is made before a customer orders, generic names are used. I will often use "User" or "Owner". By your pics, I can see the OEM used "Owner".

The SB 128 is pretty crappy compared with the choices that are available these days. A 5.1 Live or any Audigy card would be much better.

Unfornately Microsoft has screwed up, if XP doesn't have the drivers it needs for a IDE/SCSI controller card, it requires a floppy. I always have to dig a floppy out when using my other RAID card because of this goof by Microsoft. As far as I still know there is still no fix to get around it and...

The Onboard sound should work fine enough, but you can try disabling it in the BIOS and then trying out the games. If your games still crash, then I would suspect the video card has problems.

Using DVD Rom to play DVDs on TV - sound setup question

Easiest way to get sound to your TV is by getting a 1/8" stereo-to RCA(red/white) Audio cable. Then set you computer's volume high and you will be able to control the volume on the TV easily with its remote.

Instantaneous power down, no reboot

You'll need to check every component. This could be anything from the CPU. Motherboard, PSU or Memory. A underpowered PSU normally reboots the machine randomly, but your setup is seriously too much power for a 250W. I couldn't even imagine the system booting in the first place. Did Gateway sell...

monitor making noise?

It can't be fixed, only dealt with. Its part of the aging process with a monitor. You either need to deal with it, buy some audio canceling headphones, or buy a new monitor.
