OK, I've changed my mind, in a sense. If you're really trying to be penny-pinching, get the Radeon 9100. If you're trying to get every last drop of juice out of those one hundred dollars, get a Ti4200 or even a 4400. Just my four cents :P

is it possible to recreate the win2k installation disc?

I've heard of apps that can make a liveCD from an existing windows installation, but they only work with the hardware they were created on . . . beyond that, I don't think there is a way :(

wireless network card and mouse question

I've used a wireless mouse (a logitech, don't remember the model, but it was an RF-based one) with a WiFi setup many times with no problems. Although i've not heard about RF-mice using the same frequency with BlueTooth.

Which video card for under $100?

For a little more on newegg (60-70), I'd get a Radeon 9100. The preformance is about the same, but the 9100 has better image quality. The again it could be personal bias :P

Hard drive question?

I've heard that you can take the controller board from the underside and replace it, and that this sometimes works. The only catch is, you've got to get the same model, with the EXACT same firmware, otherwise no go. However, this may not help you since the drives already spin up, but aren't...

MS Service Pack Install Question - Safe Mode

Not sure . . . I've always installed service packs from a regular enviorment, as long as I make sure no extra processes are running. Then again, I don't use AV stuff, so that may be a problem, though probably not. I'd just disable it, kill any superfluous processes/services and you should be good.

Installing Windows XP while keeping the other Win2K NTFS partition...ok?

It should work just fine, Goi, XP will read any version of NTFS past NT 4.0 SP6, and Win2k's version is basically identical - you'll have all your files on the other partions.

W2K Encryption Question

SeTeS, if you need something basic, PGP is pretty good, as it will let you encrypt lots individual files (alas, not the filesystem). It's encryption isn't the greatest, but it would be a decent deterrent at least, which is what you said you need. Personally, I'd use Windows Privacy Tools...
