I just want to thank all who have offered help. I haven't been able to solve the problem, and I'm becoming convinced that the drive must be defective. I think I have a good source for a replacement; I'll report back on any progress. Thanks again.

One other thing: Even though the BIOS is password protected, the HP laptop has a feature whereby I can still alter the boot order. By pressing the Esc key during bootup, I can enter the boot menu, which currently shows 1. CD-ROM/DVD Drive 2.*Removable Device 3.*Hard Disk

I haven't implemented redbeard1's suggestion yet, but let me add a couple of observations. When I reformatted the c: drive initially, from NTFS to FAT32, and each time since, it seems to report a disk size around 4 MB. MB, not GB. Is there a DOS command to confirm the disk capacity after...

I extracted the HP hotswap files on another computer, then transfered them to the laptop's c: drive via floppy. Unfortunately, when I tried to execute the setup program for the hotswap files, it calls for "win SETUP.EXE" and doesn't find it on c: giving me a "Bad command or file name" error...

OK, you helped me get started, but for a number of reasons, it didn?t work. For one thing, simply copying the contents of the startup disk go c: was a no go, because access to overwrite DRVSPACE.BIN was denied, and the many of the copied files from the bootdisk seemed to get in the way. So...

Thanks for the suggestions. I did further investigation and found that the drive, a Samsung, requires metric screws with "M3" threading. After scouring the net, I found that you can get 'em online at a few places (but didn't see 'em on CompUSA's web site). Usually shipping drove the price up...
