Did some testing on my NP8658-S.
I ran the Unigin Heaven benchmark and looped it a few times temps were mostly at 63c but every once in awhile went to 64c.
I then ran FurMark for awhile and it maxed out at 78c.
I didn't notice any thermal throttling in either test for the 980m.
I have an odd use case. The ram(since upgraded to 64gig) is for running Cisco VIRL to simulate networks. I went with 4k for screen real estate outside of gaming. But make sure you have good vision because 4k on a 15" screen is tiny.

have you checked to see if transfer speeds are higher than 100mbps? I know on ESXI I had a virtual NIC report as 1gbps and I was able to get more than that out of it.
The 840 PRO was on my list. I was primarily looking at published write endurance. And even on most higher end SSD's they have only slightly elevated published write endurance.

I went through the same thing recently. I used up 6TB of writes in a year. Still got awhile till it is warn out but I guess I have write endurance anxiety.
The resource monitor in windows 7 or newer is a huge help as it can monitor what program is writing to the SSD.
I had a 8gb stick fail and was down to only 8gb and I did have windows pop-up complaining about low memory. It was always the because I have a bad habit of having 30-40 tabs open in chrome. For gaming I didn't notice any issues with only 8gb.

With the firmware update my 1TB 840 evo seems fine. Graph is pretty stable at 500MB/s with a few dips to 300MB/s. I can't say I ever noticed this issue myself it always seemed fast to me.
