You don't really need that icon to be eligible for an upgrade. I have done the upgrade to a newly built htpc without the icon, though with all the latest updates of course.

Are those at stock clock settings? I wonder if an overclocked A6 @ 2GHz will be able to play it at 30FPS and a bit higher settings considering stock runs only 1.4.

You could get an app called Notifier that you can setup to vibrate or beep or do both every 1/2/5/10 minutes for however long. You do need to be jailbroken though.
Thats Apple for you, they'll have a refresh of the iPhone by this coming June. However, if you still do want an iPhone, you could try eBay and get the first generations for cheap.
Interesting, my DV6045nr shows a similar symptom as it would not post often but stay on. After cleaning the heatsink and using a new thermal compound on all the chips, it started to post fine. Have you tried cleaning the inside of your laptop?
