actually i just have plain maxtor 250's in mine. but i haven't seen a difference in speed between the drives being internal or usb2. i actually just pruchased two more, i i will have all 10 of my usb2 ports filled with these guys...nice way to have a 2.5TB array.
sounds like you have otheer problems. i have 4 of these two have 250Gb drives in them, one has a new 8X DVD burner in it and the other has a 120 in it. no transfer problems at all. have not costered a single dvd and have never had a problem connecting these to any of my systems.
