    Making a solar panel

    I can solder to the traces on the silicon, but not the silicon itself. When I solder to the thick connecting trace on the surface of the cell, the connection is good. But because these are scrap cells, I need to make my own connecting trace on the surface. I wasted a large amount of solder on a...

    Making a solar panel

    Recently I purchased some scrap solar cells. I'm attempting to connect the scrap cells together. Soldering works, it makes a low resistance connection, but it seems the solar cells and the solder expand at different rates when heated/cooled, and the solder literally falls off, flux helps, but...

    Beating the lottery

    Ok, so it's obvious that you can't beat the odds for the jackpot, but whatabout the smaller winnings? Would the smaller winnings out-weigh the minimum number of tickets required? Probably not, anybody interested in crunching the numbers for the smaller winnings?

    Stacking magnets

    I do have some older >1GB Hard Drives. I'll have to remove a platter, swipe it a couple of times (without touching it), and put it back in. I wonder how durable hard drives really are... As for the 120, maybe i did just damage some circuitry. But I do know for a fact, that before it worked, and...

    Stacking magnets

    I did swipe the drive a few times with about 50-60 of them stacked together (on purpose, not by accident). I have no way of testing the drive, but they certainly broke it, I know that much. I originally thought that the drive was bad to begin with, but only after I made it worse did I find out...

    Stacking magnets

    I have about 80+ Hard Drive Magnets stuck to my wall right now, these magnets are pulling the screws out from under the paint! anyways, after about 20 stacked on top of each other, they didn't really get noticeably stronger (I just ended up having more :)). After they started loosing streignth...

    64-Bit

    wouldn't you be able to preform an operation on a full 64 bit number in one clock cycle? So couldn't you just slap 2 32 bit numbers side by side, and do an operation on both at the same time (where applicable). Wouldn't that give you a 2x performance gain (once again, where applicable)?

    The "How did we get here Thread"

    There must be a higher level or reality to contain that infinite loop you suggest. There doesn't necessarily have to be a beginning, and there doesn't necessarily have to be an end. But there must be cause and effect: If there was no beginning, then everything we see always existed, and always...

    The "How did we get here Thread"

    There is one problem with that idea: What would have started that whole chain of events? Something must have started it, whether it is nothing (literally), or something. If it was something, then what started that something? You can trace it all the way back to the beginning. Nothing started...

    The "How did we get here Thread"

    Now this is the one thing everybody uderstands. If there is no god, that scenario would suck. So they are forever in denial (The first of the five steps). The second step is Anger. When debating with my religious friends, I find they always get angry with me.

    The "How did we get here Thread"

    What if the raw materials created themselves simply by following the rules they create? Imagine that there is absolutely nothing at all. You are at second zero, and there is a void, in fact, not even that. Simply nothing. Well, this nothingness has a very special property: There is only one of...

    The "How did we get here Thread"

    A long time ago people said "bless you" when somebody sneezed because they believed your soul was made vulnerable. Nowadays, people say it just to avoid being rude. Now we know that a sneeze is nothing more then a way of eradicating micro-organisms/harmful particles from the human body...

    The "How did we get here Thread"

    Can anybody prove that there is/are no god/gods? I don't think so. Can anybody prove that there isn't/aren't a/any god/gods? I don't think so. But here is the big one: If there was a god, what level would he/she operate at? Most people blame the things they don't understand on a god. But...

    Wow, hold on there. A limit can have an exact answere: the limit as 'x' approaches '2' of 1+x is equal to 3

    The "How did we get here Thread"

    What's wrong with that? It is very posable that one thing led to the next and that eventually created us. But it is also very posable that everything just spontaneously created itself three seconds ago. It is also very posable that both are true. To find out, you'd have to think philosophically...

    OK, infinity: Think of a pipe in a void. This pipe is infinite units long. You are in this void. You grab onto this infinite units long pipe. You will not instantly jolt in one direction. "This pipe is infinite units long", that means that it has a constant length and that it isn't 'growing' as...

    Old Compaq, How do I make it boot without a keyboard

    I have an old 133 compaq computer that is running as a smoothwall, and I want it to boot without a keyboard installed. I managed to get into the "user friendly" BIOS and it was the worst BIOS I have ever seen; It looked like Windows 3.1, and did not hat a halt on errors option. I think I have to...

    1 = 0.99... (RossGr)

    So why can't you just add 1/oo ? I think that is an irrational number, but (sqrt2)^2=2, so wouldn't 0.9...+(1/oo)=1 you couldn't add 2/oo because that would produce 0.0...2 (yes I know that n/oo=1/oo but that is because we are working with oo and anything is game... right??) My notation is...

    1 = 0.99... (RossGr)

    It is because we are using a base 10 math system. It is the same as saying in binary, 1.1... equals 10. If we used a base 9 math system, then yes 0.9... in base 10 equals 1 in base 9. Using algebra in a fancy way doesn't explain anything when you use irrational numbers that can be explained...

    why are wafers round

    So why not make the CPU cores cone shaped so they use the entire wafer? Uneven heating??--maybe AMD/INTEL could make a deal with some thermal compound company and literally pour it underneath there heat spreader instead of that glue. I say we keep this tread going in hopes some AMD/INTEL...
