It matters a great deal. BH-5 to go with if you can find it anywhere.

Sempron prices listed, looks good for socket 754 people UPDATE REVIEW 3100+

I fail to see any attraction with these chips. It looks only like a rebranding business to me.

I'll be getting my Vapochill LS next week :)

Unfortunately, the price is similar too.:D But seriously, phase change is a heck of a better choice than any watercooling. It is way simpler and more effective. I just don't understand why the prices cannot get to some more reasonable level, say $500.

What will Socket 754 owners do?

For now Hammer rules, and 754 is the way to go given the prices. I am done with mobile Bartons, A-64 is faster and better, Intel offers are in disarray. I don't know what to wait, if you want to wait then you'll never have anything because it is always "in a few months ... something better comes...

    CL2 or CL3?

5 extra fps? It is going to be a hell of a lot more than that. 2-2-2 beats the hell out of 3-3-3 any way you take it.

    A 64 3400+ with a thermaltake aquarius 3

I doubt that. Aquarius 3 has not been able to beat top quality air cooling (Thermalright) on Barton so to expect it would do a better job on Athlon 64 is not believable. http://www.overclockercafe.com/Reviews/cooling/Tt_Aquarius_III/pg_5.html You can check it here on Athlon 64, it beats Venus...

    THG sings Prescott's execution warrant

You are very wrong. THG is very Intel biased. I still remember some real bad and even derogatory comments on AMD. I use both types of processors but as far as comparison between AMD and Intel on THG is NOT the place for unbiased reviews.

    THG sings Prescott's execution warrant

http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20040517/index.html So there is no advantage of Prescott over Northwood? Now why would anybody buy this microwave owen?

what will be expected Price-availability-performance of the upcoming socket 939

The ball is in Intel court. If Intel does not come with something more impressive soon you will see outrageous AMD 939 prices. That is my guess. And do not expect AMD can break much higher than 2.6 GHz this year with AMD 64. That is my guess. We'll see 3700+ and perhaps 4000+ later in the year...

    D0 Stepping Prescott and Newegg

Yeah I've seen it. I can make 20th there with my AMD 64 3400+. I see there is one Northwood behind me with 3.8+ GHz. So nothing short of 4 GHz Prescott for me. Anything lower than 4 GHz is just not impressive to me. And my AMD 64 is good for everyday use, meaning it isn't just one time...

Really. So far none for me. Don't be discouraged by Soulkeeper, he is a #1 technology destructor around here. Sometimes it seems he is doing it for the pure fun and entertainment.

Are we likely to see any more socket A chips from AMD

:D I have a little computer lab over here. The last one I built has 64-3400+ in it. It is the champ in my "lab." I have two more 64-3200+, both nearly as fast. Two more mobile Bartons, and a bunch of older ones, all the way down to K6-400, still working fine with Windows 98 SE!

Antec SMARTPOWER 300W..... enough to run 2.8C @ 3.5 with....

This power supply will work "overtime" meaning it won't last long. Why not to get a better one, say Enlight 420W is cheaper than many performance CPU heatsinks?

Are we likely to see any more socket A chips from AMD

754 has no life left? News to me. Wait until you see prices/performance of 939 for that judgement.

My AMD VS P4 Prescott comparison of the day...

By the way, I have one question only. What is SuperPI @2 MB. This is the only thing important to me. I've seen AMD 64 doing it in low 80ies, FX-53 nicely overclocked can go below 80 seconds. So what is your Prescott capable of?
  18. J

My AMD VS P4 Prescott comparison of the day...

Fair or not, this indicates Prescott is a good chip only the heating problem is really bad. I sold one of my PC that was waiting to get upgraded with Prescott because of that. At this point, unless Intel solves heating problem I have no plans for Prescott. And Intel on notice, I am not the only...

Intel focuses on new 'super' chip.

Dual core sounds like a dual price to me. Watch out.
  20. J

    WOW FX53 rocks!!!!

That is all? This doesn't sound as 2.7 GHz, more like <2.5 GHz to me. Yet again. You 2.7 sounds much like 2.5 GHz or less. Drystone ALU for 2.7 GHz AMD 64 should be above 11,000.

Which is faster, mobile barton at 2500 or Athlon64 3000 at 2350 ?

Barton @ 2.6 GHz is about as good as Athlon 64 at 2.35 GHz. At least in integer benchmarks. So there is some truth in the statement at least from the financial point of view. But once we get 64-bit Windows and applications the difference will be even bigger.

Is 1.7V too much for A64?

I use 1.7 on both 64-3200 and 64-3400 and I even think it is not high enough. Why would that be a problem?

HOT HOT HOT: Chaintec nforce 3 250 mobo at newegg for $79.99 after instant rebate

This board is not impressive at all, there is nothing better about it than old 150 boards, only the name. Plus it seems it does not have multiplier selection, which is weird. Definitely a pass and waiting for more 250 boards.

    BH-5?

If you believe that all 3000 are BH-5 or at least Winbond, then go to Best Buy, they have them cheaper, for $59 a piece of 256 MB.
  27. J

Okay, I finally bought some good ram

Latencies are very important with Intel as well. They make a heck of a difference only since Intel bus goes all the way to 300 much easier than AMD, it is impossible to keep latencies low on 1:1.
  28. J

    BH-5?

Don't be too sure about that. Not all 3000 are BH-5, not recently. I think it is impossible to find BH-5 any more anywhere.

NF7-S v2 onboard NIC massive drain on system?

I notice this too but to lesser extent than in your case. Perhaps you have somebody doing networking on your PC, virus comes to mind. To be fair to Abit, this is not just the case with Abit motherboards that onboard NIC impacts the performance for benchmarking. I can tell you it also happens on...

Any reason I shouldn't use standard heatsink compound on AMD CPU?

Shin-Etsu is as good as Artic Silver but as said if you are tinkering with processors often (I do) then you need some thermal paste and AS is as good as they go plus it is really cheap.
  31. J

    64 mobile advantages?

You also need to mod the heatsink for that as socket 754 does not allow easy handling as the old 460 socket. Pretty much a bad idea unless you know what you are doing.

    Finally 3400+ works as needed

I envy you. Unfortunately my BH-5 won't go over 227-228 with 2-2-2-5 on 2.8V. Asus K8V has voltage only to 2.8V and PCI/AGP problem at about 228. If you get it to 233 I have to relax memory timmings and the performance drops. By the way what is your SuperPI @2MB on 2.61 GHz? I am definitely...

    Finally 3400+ works as needed

Guys, I am lazy dude so I won't be posting any pictures. The comparison is with my two mobiles, believe me I know what I am talking about. I have my faster mobile 2600+ now running at 2.64 GHz in NF7-S with the same type of memory (BH-5) in 1:1 sync. Not even close to 64-3400+.

    Finally 3400+ works as needed

Got my Athlon 64 3400+ to work Prime95 stable at 2.475 GHz on air cooling with 225 memory bus 1:1. Only about 50 MHz better of what my old 3200+ could but because of BH-5 working synchronuously with the chip at aggressive 2-2-2-5 I get 82 seconds SuperPI @2MB. Asus K8V performs just beautifully...

    Questions on nForce3 250

Well I have chips that run monstrous frequencies with the most aggressive latencies in Intel board of mine but they cannot manage anything close to that in AMD board. Try overclocking with : 1. 4 banks 2x512 2. 2 banks 2x256 3. 1 bank 1x256 ... in AMD board, whichever setup, for example in K8...

    Questions on nForce3 250

I think the major problem with overclocking Athlon 64 is not PCI/AGP lock but crapy memory controller that cannot handle high frequencies and low latencies in the same time. There is much to be desired for improvement. I for one do not understand why is that Intel chipset can handle memory the...

    Opteron 146 - High end ???

Avoid Opteron 146 at all costs, it is not worth it. Opteron makes sense only in dual/quad setup where it is a powerfull chip, else it is just a waste of money. FX-51 is too expensive as well and performance isn't all that bigger than 754 chips.
