the argument is that you're basically paying for the better warranty. don't buy it for it's "superior cooling capabilities" because there is nothing new or superior about the design of the cooler, it's just a metal plate with a puny cooler underneath.
the 2005fpw is quite nice, i have one as well. it's really cheap for a big LCD too, you can get it for like $400 shipped (as someone else noted), and the quality is great.
obviously you never get a 'good deal' buying a top-end card, since playing the waiting game will always bring you a better deal. it just depends how much cash you have and what you want to do with it
chances are that if the mobo has the ability to use both PCI-E *AND* AGP that performance would suffer on one of the two. normally on those types of boards, i've seen AGP suffer instead of PCI-E, though, so that is strange.
The rumors are that the GT version is what's going to be released tomorrow, but I'm unsure of whether there will be any extra surprises (7600, 7200?).
what i can tell you is that i've played FEAR demo with a ATI X850 XT PE, and with a 7800GTX. the x850 xt pe does have some stuttering believe...
PCI-E won't have any influence on performance, so the 6800 is going to be the faster card. for the purpose of upgradability though, I would say go with PCI-Express. by the time they decide they want to upgrade, they'll likely have a hard time finding an AGP card
speaking from a performance standpoint - no. however, AGP support is dwindling, and you will find that the 7xxx series and ATI's next-gen will add support for AGP late in the game if at all.

that was a fairly uneducated opinion if i've ever seen one... sounds like you're an ATI fanboy to me. SM3.0 is better because more future games will use SM3.0. That is why ATI (hopefully) is going to be implementing SM3.0 in their next-gen hardware.

i'm guessing we won't be seeing any 7800 Ultra AT LEAST until CrossFire hits the market, but more likely not until right before (or around) when ATI unveils the real next-gen stuff.
i could be mistaken but i believe that board has 3 slots so that you can either use the two outside ones for SLI, or the middle one by itself if you aren't using SLI. it would get rid of the need for a paddle, but the implementation is stupid because it's wasting a slot :-P
i wouldn't say that you're "bottlenecked" with 1280x1024 necessarily
what are the rest of your system specs? with a 7800gtx what you ARE likely to have a bottleneck with is your CPU.
Prices are not going to drop on the 11th. I can't tell you what is going to be released on the 11th, but if you want to head on over to TheInq.net, they mention what will be unveiled at QuakeCon.
If your client wants a 7800GTX, just get it for him now. Prices are more than likely not moving...
