Would you get an AlienWare 51m or Dell 8600?

Of your choices, the dell. However, if I was looking for a desktop replacement, I'd go with one of the emachines a64 laptops.

Whats the best laptop? Price is no object...

If he's 50...i'd look at something with a larger screen, well, depending on how good his eyesight is. IBM T4x would be my choice for him.

should also consider 12" ibook with edu discount. Max out the ram, get a wireless card and she'd be set.

Advice needed for laptop purchase - easy requirements :)

Portable and Long battery life, Reliable, and inexpensive (<$250) are in conflict with each other. :P Well, depending upon your definition of portable and long battery life.

Noob? I was on anandtech in 1999. I just happenned to get banned and finally got around to reregistering. In any case, the ads are what is supporting the forums, and if you want to block them, so be it. I just find it lame.

The best value card

I'm guessing it's called black friday because it's such a huge day for sales and is the official start of christmas shopping season. So the retailers make money, and are in the "black" as opposed to red. That's my theory at least. As for the <100 range, I think the gf4 might be your best...

I think most of the issues with CoD were due to catalyst 3.8 drivers.

Mozilla 1.5 or Firebird 0.7?

Thunderbird is the mail client companion for firebird. If you want to replace outlook express, get it. It has some additional features...such as spam filtering and spell checking. It does seem to take up more ram that outlook express though, but functionally, doesn't seem all that different...

Paid $129 for a 9600SE got a 9600PRO at BB

It's 300mhz, they're quoting 600 because it's DDR. Marketspeak rocks.

9600XT, 9500 softmod or 9600Pro ?

Why it's called AnandTech The xt seems to be closer to 200 than 150. Go with the 9600pro if you don't care about getting hl2 for free when it does come out. If you do, factor that into to cost and see if it's worth it to you. The 9500 is a decent card itself, even better if you can softmod it.

Hrmm...anand benched using real games. :P I'm currently deciding the same thing...I'm leaning towards the 5900 but I'll probably wait for black friday to see if I can get a deal.
