Server Recommendations

First Linux Box

I prefer openbsd.. VERY stable, and very easy to set up.. Also, build Ethereal from the ports collection (You'll need to install X), and then run it on your external interface.. You get to see LOTS of fun stuff! :)

using cat5e cable for telephones?

Phone pullsw can be CAT3 or higher, since they don't have NEARLY the bandwidth or NEXT req'd of 100base communications... Trust me, we have over 500 phones in my office, all CAT3 pulls.. Why do you think they still sell it? Certainly you don't think there are still people installing 10Base...

Depending upon the number of stations you have, I'd look into a Symantec VelociRaptor. It's a 1U box that can be had for ~$800 for a 40 node license. You can block anything by anything.. You can allow certain IPs to have free reign, certain IPs to only have port 80, etc, whatever you want...

Traffic Monitoring

MRTG is useful for monitoring tha AMOUNT of traffic, but if you actually want to look at the traffic, I'd use Ethereal. It's a nice open source packet analyzer (sniffer). Yes, it's been ported to Win32 for those of you that are afraid of *nix/XWindows..

Every network that I've ever built, when it asks for a DNS server address, you give it the address of the DNS server, whether it's yours, or your ISP's, or whoever's... A Pro level OS can't serve DNS, it's not part of the abilities it has (unless you run some type of third party DNS server...

Someone has even ported Ethereal to run on the Wintel platform now, too.. The *nix version is a little more stable, and a LOT faster though.. But it requires X Windows, which not many people bother to set up if it's just a firewall...

wiring question

Depending upon whether or not the CAT5 is wired properly, you SHOULD be able to use GbaseT over your existing cable plant.. GbaseT uses all 4 pairs, though, so if you're doing power over Ethernet or anything, you're going to lose that... As far as noticing a difference, I guess it depends on...

How do you manage your users?

My users don't have desktops, they are ALL WinTerms copnnecting via RDP to a network load balanced group of Terminal Servers.. However, to effectively manage XP Pro boxes, you can RDP into them, you can use SUS, and you can admin them at the domain level with remote admin tools...

I'm not sure about why they don't implement SSL.. Could have to do with the servers they use (perhaps they don't support it?), it could have to do with ease of setting up clients (most people's PCs are self-configured, they just mail you a modem and instructions -- saves the $50 install fee)...

Yes, IMAP can be used, but most ISP's don't support it (Hotmail and the like do, but...) I know the ISP I have only supports POP3 (I don't use it anyway, so it doesn't matter)... I like the centralized PST idea.. Nice!

Check your BIOS.. Most mainboards need to be set for "headless" operation, otherwise they throw up a hardware error at POST...

Yeah, it's not the end of the world, except that I also have Adelphiam, and... My firewall runs OpenBSD. Fire up Ethereal, sniff the WAN side of the connection, and you find ALL SORTS of fun stuff.. You can only sniff your local segment, but.... ALL the usernames/passwords for email access...
