How to get the most out of my network?

easyest fix would be to get a bigger switch (imo) gig would be nice, but not really needed (plus thats a lot of gig cars you'd have to buy, but if you got the $$ go for it) that should even out what ever inter switch problems your having (which is all it sounds like is going on )

    wiring question

fiber has a very long life to it, its extreamly cost effective in the long run because you wont need to up grade it any time soon. the strand of fibre your running gigabit eithernet over will run 10 gig or 100gig in the future. the gig nic's are very reasonable, and depending on what vender...

    wiring question

Conventional Fibre Channel is still limited to 1/2 Gbps, depending on the transmitters. Although there's nothing inherent in the fiber preventing it from going faster. 10Gbps backbones are *very* expensive, and require single-mode fiber and special gear. when you read his statement, focus on...

    Patch panel vs. switch?

Well im really used to working on a much larger scale than a home network, the last patch pannel i picked up (96 port) cost 450 odd dollars, a punch down tool (110block and 66block) is around 50, so is a RJ-45 crimper, the UTP is fairly cheap, not sure on a cost per foot, but that should be...

    10/100 Mbps Throughput Issue

How is it even possible these cables are working if these standards aren't followed? A: while it really is a bad habit, Cat5 cabling can be made how ever you want, as long as the cables are the same on both ends (for a strait through) or as long as pairs 1 2 3 and 6 are crossed (for a cross...

    Patch panel vs. switch?

Patch pannels really are just for testing / easy reconfiguration. i dunno if you've priced a good quality patch pannel, but they are not cheap! plus you will have to learn how to punch down the cat5 in the back (if you dont already know how) really more trouble than its worth for a home...

    wiring question

sounds like your all set up for some gig links, also, look into upgrading to a Fiber backbone at some point, mutlimode for the most part, there is no speed limit on fiber so you'll never have to upgrade again (good sell to the budget dept ;) and you can get a 10gig backbone between all your...
