Kingston HyperX 4GB DDR3 kit $20 AR AC FS

Sorry, my reply did not come out as I expected after I quoted another post. I was stating that 2 gig was enough for most users (non-gamers), and 3 gig was enough for "most" gamers. There will always be exceptions. The way MS and hardware "sellers" would have you believe, all must have at...

Kingston HyperX 4GB DDR3 kit $20 AR AC FS

I would lower that number to 3GB, even for gamers. Tests continously show that anything above 2 gig barely increases performance, and even less gains noted above 3GB. Of course always will be some exceptions, but those users already know who they are.

    Small gaming laptop

I don't know why CurseTheSky keeps posting this FUD, maybe to try to justify his own purchase? No need, as the Envy is "not that bad". Sure, HP always rates at the bottom of the list for quality, (see squaretrade) and is the most unreliable brand out there, but at least the Envy "had" a good...

HP with Intel i5-460M or AMD Phenom II Quad N950

Be aware that not all HD 5650's used in laptops are the same. Many, such as the HP Envy, underclock the graphics card. This results in some owners reporting that a HD5650 might not be as powerful as it really could be. Some reasons for this include compensated for a system that does not...

    HP Envy 14 User Review

As another tech that has to fix these regularly, I agree 100%. But, stop causing problems for us. The more they sell, the better job security we have. Please, keep buying HP's. I need another car and boat soon.

Looking to buy an Acer® Aspire AS5745-7247

It is hard to judge a laptop by brand name alone, without regard to model. Acer = junk? Yes, with "some" models. HP = junk? Yes, with "some" models. In my experience servicing 100's of laptops, HP is far worse than Acer. With that said, I was going to suggest one of the "Cheap, you get...

Laptop that can play Civ 5 for $700-800

I just picked one up and it screams for a $750 gaming laptop. 8 hours battery life. Around 4 lbs. 3dmark2k6 scores 10,124 when overclocked, which these 4820TG's also do great. Has HDMI out as original poster requested, which eliminates any questions about screen resolution (you can do...

    15.6" Gaming Laptops

If 30fps on high settings in Crysis is what you are looking for as a minimum, then it looks like the ATi 5730 (and perhaps the 5650) will fall into the minimum needed to run crysis on a 15.6" laptop. Newegg has Acer TimelineX 4820TG with i5-460m and HD 5650 priced at $750 now. Amazon around...

    15.6" Gaming Laptops

Is that a joke? Or do you really think ATi is not as reliable as nvidia? Just to be clear we are comparing similar performing DX11 capable products, the 75w GTX 460m performance level falls between the 50w HD 5870 and 39w HD 5850

    15.6" Gaming Laptops

The problem with that would be the 15.6" version. The GPU combo would need some serious cooling. In a 17", it would still be hot and loud, but in a 15.6"? Nothing against nvidia, but a similar performing ATi (like the 5850) would use 1/3 less power, and might be better suited to the smaller...

    Gaming Laptop under $1500

if I was looking for a 17" gaming laptop, the Asus G73 looks like it has it all for a great price. Only 2.5 hours on the 50w GPU, but with a laptop like this, moving it regularly and running on battery for very long probably won't happen much.

ZOTAC GF6100-E-E Mobo + APEX MI-008 w/ PS Mini ITX Combo $50 AR

Yes I measured with Killawatt, and total power used runs 45W at idle desktop screen to 74W prime95 or 3dm2005. The power supply fan barely moves air. The CPU fan 1/4" below it moves much more air. I suspect that because the CPU is taking available air, none makes it through the power supply...

Sempron 140 stock HSF fits with about 1/4" to spare. Maybe you could swap one out or similar? This thing runs HOT. Probably a good thing I could not get a video card to work, as I have needed to use that space to add a cooling fan to the system. Still idles at 50c and Prime 95 peaks around...

No luck with X1 to X16 mod. Guessing that success depends on motherboard used. Maybe one with 24pin power? Soldering iron heated tip is good way to open slot without damaging anything. Tape to insulate unused portion of x16 card, as it will touch USB header pins. Remove hold down pushpin...

Many reports of being able to modify the PCI-e x1 slot by opening up the end (cut it open). This then allows most low end PCI-e x16 cards to fit in there, and most will work! Google "pci-e x16 in x1 slot" for more info. It does work for many, but I think depends on the motherboard. Did not see...

Read the reviews at Newegg and Creative. They make a lot of different headsets with Fatal1ty names, and it can get confusing. These require a decent sound card for best results. $30 is about what the normal price for these should be. The USB version has the X-Fi Fatal1ty sound card built...

    New 5770 performing crappy

Your 3dmark numbers seem correct. Perhaps your motherboard is not as good as used in some of the other benchmarks you have seen? Memory speed makes a big difference. Or, maybe since you tested in Vista, while others tested in XP or Win7? The HD 5770 performs about the same as the HD 4870...

ATI Control Center vs Nvidia Control Panel

This ended up forcing me to switch back to ATi in a HTPC, which was fine, since the nvidia cards were cheap, and simply a test to see how well they would work for my needs. The nvidia display controls will probably be fine for most, but if you choose to do more than basic things, they are...

Why use server software like WHS instead of Win7 or other OS?

How can it recover all data? If you install WHS in a 100 gig drive, then later add a 1TB drive. All important data is saved on the 1TB drive. You have 800gig, then the drive craps out. All that is left intact is the original 100 gig drive. You are saying that is enough, and no data will be lost?
