Seafood imports from China raised in water tainted with untreated sewage

The first thing I do when I'm shopping at the local asian grocery store is to check the country of origin. If its made in China, it goes right back to the shelf. I'm starting to see more and more perishable foods from China. Stuff like dumplings and even mushrooms. It amazing that its...

What were the best and worst Christmas gift's you ever recieved?

Worst gift was some Mormon children's book I got from my friend when I was 10. All the gifts I get from workplace gift exchange have also been pure crap. Junk like a fugly pewter mug, ceramic angel figurines. These gifts are so bad, I would be embarassed to re-gift them. No more...

Do you believe that man and the dinosaurs lived at the same time?

Of course dinos lived at the same time as man. Noah employed flying dinos to gather all the animals for the ark.

    Blown Capacitors

The faulty capacitor problem was known for a while before Epox manufactured my board. Yet, they still used the faulty caps. By then, the industry would have know which caps/manufacture were faulty. I also have a Epox Nforce 2 board with bad caps. I've seen some mobo advertise that...

    Blown Capacitors

My 8rda+ also developed bad caps after 1.5 years. Kinda annoyed at Epox for using junk caps just to save a few dollars. At least Epox has a 3 year warranty on the mobo. I RMA mine to Epox, took about 3 weeks to get it back.

did you ever think you were getting jipped by your dentist?

Yeah, I think most of them were impacted. I do remember one was a horizontal impaction. I remember that one because it looked so strange on the x-ray. You can get discounts with some dentists and endo by offering to pay immediately. Sometimes 5 or 10% discount. At least some discount for...

did you ever think you were getting jipped by your dentist?

It was about 10 years ago, my dentist refered me to a oral surgeon. I think it was somthing ~ $3000. My uncle (general dentist) in Taiwan extracted them for me, he lol'd at needing a oral surgeon.

did you ever think you were getting jipped by your dentist?

I'm only bitching about the price of dental work in the US. In Taiwan the price for the same root canal is about 1/5. A couple of years back, I needed to have four wisdom tooth removed. It would have cost a ton in the US. I saved ~$2k by flying back to Taiwan to get the work done...

did you ever think you were getting jipped by your dentist?

I felt ripped off when I went to the endotontist. The endo had the nicest dental office I've seen. $800-1000 for a root canal (30-40 minutes of work). I was uninsured at that time too! My regular dentist even jokes about how endos are making the big $.

    Mathematica > Maple

I tend to use Matlab for numerical analysis and Maple for symbolic manipulation. At my university, the EE used Matlab, while Maple was optional. Maple is really handy for the classes that did a lot of equation manipulation. It saves a lot of time with integration and algebra.

Best laptop for law school... must have good keyboard

I like the portability of the IBM/Lenovo X series. Excellent build quality and keyboard. The new X60 looks pretty nice. The lack of optical drive on a notebook isn't a issue for me, since the only time I use a optical drive is to install software.

List the things you hate while at the gym

Stuff I find amusing at the gym.... The guy that puts on more weight then he can handle. Such as doing a whole body preacher curl. They have such horrible form, I tempted to tell them to put on less weight. A fat 250lb woman that does curls with 2.5 lb dumbells. People that goes through...

    White Student Calls Self African-American

I've seen very few blacks in the sciences and engineering. There was ONE single black engineering student during my undergrad and graduate studies in EE. Graduate school was around 80% asians and Indians!

BBS way back then were free or pay?

I use to pay $20 or $30 a year to a BBS with around 10 phone lines, you would get 60 minute and 3 meg daily d/l. The same BBS had free access also, but it was limited to 15 minutes and access to 1 phone line, and a ul/dl ratio. It was money well spent, it was the easiest way to get new...

    Ways to cheat in college.

I knew a stupid cheater that I went to school with. He was in the Comp Eng program. This guy did very little of his own work. He would wait by the network printer in the computer lab, and whenever someone printed something useful, he would hijack it before the user could pick it up. Another...

How to get A's in college?

Make a bunch of friends in your classes/major. It sounds stupid, but they can often help you more then the TA or Prof. I graduated with a EE, there was a huge difference in classes with friends vs classes by myself. I didn't do too well in the heavy math or physics classes either. I'll...

Can someone explain to me why some consider it a good thing to go through engineering classes without using calculators?

I'm lazy and avoid solving by hand whenever possible. I think given the choice, the majority of engineers would rather have a program do the manual calculation for them. It also depends on the problem, if I see some dinky integration, I'm not going to instantly pull out the TI89 and start...

For someone in math intensive major, what can TI-89 do that 83 plus cant?

I graduated with in EE. I didn't find graphing calculators that helpful in class, especially my last two years. The advance functions were either too slow or clunky, I could usually do it by hand faster. On tests where graphing calculators would be applicable, its usually not allowed. For...

    Taiwan History

I don't want to get into a semantic discussion on what is considered native is what is not. So lets use a new term I created five seconds ago, "pre-1949 Taiwanese". You can replace all the terms "natives" with "pre-1949 Taiwanese" in my previous post. Many of the pre-1949 Taiwanese feel...

    Taiwan History

Taiwan's current success is a result of the hard working people of Taiwan with a healthy does of US Aid and KMT's policys. I don't think many TIer would deny that. Without the KMT in Taiwan, Taiwan would have received no US aid. Without US supervision, the KMT would have ran Taiwan into the...

    Taiwan History

How about a third option, independence? With no threat from China, I wonder which choice the people of Taiwan would choose? Its so tough! I'm thinking the Taiwanese would want to join the communists, with the splendid political, social and economic freedoms. Or maybe they prefer to remain...

    Taiwan History

I consider myself TI (Taiwan Independence); and as somone said a trouble maker. I was born in Taiwan and attended grade school there. It is laughable to legitmatize China's claim on Taiwan based on "shared culture" or "shared ancestry". By that logic, China could claim shared culture and...
