Based on my past experiences, it would probably swell and possibly bruise if it were broken. (Although, there's always the chance I'm wrong.) Severe bruises can still be very painful, even though the toe isn't actually fractured.
Some friends of mine did this. They stashed a few bricks a day in the library, then snuck into the president's office one night and built a solid brick wall where his door should have been.
