Re-installed Win 10, this time from the windows iso on a USB drive. This time I checked that my HDD was there, it was. Don't know why I have to install windows twice?

Success . . . But!!! I can't see the HDD when I boot from the SSD. If I boot from the HDD I can see the SSD. Tried diskpart > list disk and the HDD does not appear. Had this problem when I first installed the SSD, solved by reinstalling Windows. PITA

Success !!! I reinstalled the latest Acer BIOS (which isn't BIOS) it was already on my HDD. Then inserted the Recovery USB, set Boot to the USB, booted and waited. Hung at 77% for at least 5-min, then proceeded to install Win 10. Now I have weeks worth of work to get Windows were I had it...

That supports my belief that Windows updates would have no problem messing with UEFI, all for the greater good of course. ;) ;) If BIOS doesn't exist, then the Acer BIOS upgrade/patch is in fact a UEFI upgrade, yes? I opened regedit today and added a line for NO AUTOMATIC WINDOWS UPDATES...

Oh didn't know that. What is the practical implication in this context? Yes, when I boot from the HDD. File mgr sees the SSD, opened it and saw many Win OS files and a 4.7GB Win iso. Also inserted it into a M.2 USB box and had no trouble reading everything. Perhaps I should format the SSD in...

Tried that at least twice in the past weeks, failed ~75%. No clue why. Also downloaded a Win 10 iso onto a USB, that also failed. Seems I should reinstall BIOS to eliminate any Win 10 upgrade crud.

Can't say yes, not sure I know how to set uefi to default. What I know and think I know: I did F9 in BIOS, that resets the BIOS in an ACER to default. My guess is that doing F9 also brought up Windows Boot Manager which is set to the HDD by default. So when I reinstalled the HDD after F9, WBM...

So how could enabling F12 cause this? All I did was enable F12 > F10 > Enter. Then No bootable drives. Then I disabled F12 > F10 > Enter, still no bootable drives. How could something so simple brick my laptop?

As a test, I took a SATA HDD from a 10-YO Dell and installed it in the Acer with the M.2. The M.2 had no problem booting and the 80GB HDD was there in Disk Management. While it had Windows on it it was probably XP, don't remember. So tends to support the claim that its two identical Windows boot...

The latest from the Acer Forum is that my problem is that I have two copies of Windows. One on each drive. Hence I need to format the HDD, then the M.2 will play nice and recognize the HDD. Your take?

You and me both! Another data point: Using the MAIN tab of the BIOS screen, there is an F12 option. It allows selecting the boot drive during POST. Enabled F12, works . . . kinda. I can boot from either drive, but . . . If I boot from the HDD, I can see either drive, tried to copy a folder...

Question M.2 will not recognize HDD

Upgraded the BIOS from 1.25 to 1.47, the latest available. Now boots from the m.2 and doesn't see the HDD. This is regardless of the boot order. To boot from the HDD I had to remove the m.2. Disk Management did not show the HDD when booted from the m.2.

You might find this interesting. I'm on the Acer forum and got a suggestion to go to msconfig > boot tab. Here's the screenshot: According to msconfig, the M.2 is NOT a boot drive.

You keep coming up with questions that are over my head. :) Never flashed a BIOS that I recall. What's involved? That Acer How-to video never mentioned flashing a BIOS. Is it possible that my M.2 is defective? Or unlikely since it will boot Windows w/o the HDD? Seems the boot stack is not...

This YouTube video published be Acer Support was my guide for the M.2 install. According to the video having a HDD with the M.2 is an either or. Retain the HDD as is or Format to a bare HDD.

So I installed the M.2, set it as #1 in the boot stack, see pic, and it booted from the HDD, not the Adata M.2. To "solve" this I've removed the HDD, booted from the M.2, reinstall the HDD and reboot. Then the PC will boot from the M.2 but the HDD will be gone.

Don't understand how just the very top part of the directory can fail yet all the data and tree of the drive are intact. That now happened a second time. Drive is now toast. I used Find and Mount to access the drive read only, everything appeared intact. Moved all files to another drive...

I tried both EaseUS and Find and Mount. Both revealed the directories and/or files. I question the FREE of EaseUS, seems to work by revealing the files you want then says "Do you want to recover?" Time to pay, ~$70. Find and Mount found the directory and allowed me to "Mount" it to any letter...
