Streaming video causes entire network to stutter - not bandwidth issue

Have a random video stuttering problem. While streaming video through my Plex media server over a hardwired connection, my entire network just grinds to a stop for a few seconds. It happens intermittently, and seemingly during random intervals. Network usually picks back up after 5-10 seconds...

Something I don't get about passwords stored in databases. And hacking them.

Basically, the "salt" is added to your password prior to hashing to add another layer of security. For instance, say your password is "password" and using a standard hashing algorithm, the token stored in your database is "1234567." If someone got a hold of your database and had a rainbow table...

What has been your experience with a garment steamer ?

Bought a Rowenta Precision Valet Garment Steamer from Woot last year and I definitely like steaming garments better than ironing. For me the biggest benefits are that you can quickly get wrinkles out without a whole lot of setup. I just roll it out (it collapses and stores pretty easily), hit...

Something I don't get about passwords stored in databases. And hacking them.

The warning from Valve was probably more for liability/PR purposes as opposed to any imminent threat on someone cracking the entire set of passwords retrieved from the database. That being said, so many people use simple/dictionary passwords that they're bound to get into one or two accounts...

Networking Support thread for the unemployed: Spring 2014

Pretty much matches up with what you just described. You have to be a US citizen and shouldn't have any criminal/terrorist (ha) history. I honestly don't know too many people who have submitted for a clearance and not received it. The primary reason more people don't have clearances is probably...

Stripped screw - screw extractor doesn't work...now what?

Trying to remove the optical drive from my laptop, the screw was already a bit stripped. Unfortunately, the Dell technicians who put together the laptop must've really cranked that screw in, because I ended up stripping the screw. I bought a set of Moody's screw extractors and those too were...

What do you guys think of me traveling the world myself.

I love traveling and think it's a great thing to experience. Just don't fool yourself into thinking that the trip is what will change you. The appeal of extended travel by yourself is that you'll essentially be able to start over. No baggage, essentially no responsibilities, and no limits. That...

I just got put in my financial place. I have to come to terms with it.

Where do you have to commute to? The Courthouse area has some nice apartments, great restaurants, and is 2 stops away from DC. You can get a decent single or efficiency for 1700 in Arlington.

    any corporate road warriors here?

Managed 4 years of constant travel (Hilton Diamond, Delta Platinum, Hertz PC, etc.) before I finally demanded a local project. Man, my GF works so much... can you beat her hours?

My point wasn't that you have to work 120 hours a week to "grow professionally." More like if you are going to work that many hours, try to make sure you're getting the most out of it professionally - because you sure as hell are not making up for it on the social end. Also, there are definitely...

Man, my GF works so much... can you beat her hours?

Working long hours in and of itself is not a virtue - flipping burgers for 80 hours a week, while making you a hard worker, does little to increase your overall value to any given company - especially because that type of lifestyle is unsustainable. However, I do think it's worthwhile to put in...

Career questions for others in IT

When calculating your ROI, you probably want to map out your worst, average, and best (realistic) case scenarios. For instance, you say you won't see any pay increase from your higher education. That would give you a negative ROI since you just invested a crapton of cash to further your career...

Career questions for others in IT

You might want to sit down and figure out which option gives you the best ROI. Depending on the program you decide to enroll in, it may take you many, many (many) years to recoup the costs of higher education. What kind of delta in pay are you expecting after you get your certs/degree?

    4th-Grade Girl: Teacher Threatened Me

I just refinanced by having the broker roll all the fees into points on the APR. No up front costs and you still get a lower APR than without refinancing. Win-win.

Relative being ass holes or us being stingy?

Reminds me of this joke... 1. Your rich (so you claim) uncle probably resents having to pay more than his equal share since he feels like he's "earned" his money by studying longer, working harder, whatever to get to where he's at today. No clue what your dad or other uncles do, nor am I...

I think it's harder to put down a drunk person than Daedalus685 makes it seem. Considering the cop tazed the guy 5 times and he was still non-compliant gives me the impression that the cop could have wailed on the guy with his fists and still not have gotten him to stop. Considering how...

Should I be annoyed by father in law's comment?

Considering how awesome you are at finding deals, shouldn't you revel in the fact that you save money while living the same lifestyle as other people who pay full price? I flew weekly for a number of years and I actually liked the down time in the airport club, lounging in first, etc. Leisure travel, though, I'd rather just get the flying portion over with and start the vacay!

Delta has much better IFE compared to the other domestic carriers (unless you get one of the older/NWA planes). Honestly, for the non-frequent flyer, price is probably the best differentiator between domestic airlines.

whats the worst work schedule you've ever had?

Longest day for me was about 34 hours. Worst stretch was a span of 3 months when I was averaging 80 hours a week not including the flight there and back if we were allowed to fly home that week. Looking back, the last 5 hours of the 34 hour day were pretty much worthless.

So how much is your Condo/Townhome monthly fee? Is this normal?

On the upper end of COA fees, but not entirely out of line with what's in the area. You can definitely find some places with ~$300-400 fees, though.

What is your accumulative GPA after you received your bachelor's degree?

Pretty sure it was something miserable in the range of 2.53 - 2.59 (it's been awhile since anyone has asked...). For me, GPA is just another tool to get your foot in the door. Right after college, it's probably one of the bigger factors in getting a face-to-face, but it's definitely not the...
