Looking for a flash or HDD based HD camcorder with firewire

Firewire isn't really necessary anymore if you're using a hard drive or Flash based camcorder. You can transfer the files via USB. But, you need to find out is what file format the camera records to. There are tons of HDD and Flash camcorders... but most record to some wacky file format or...

Firefox ?

I don't have problems with opening tabs. I just wanna know why when I click back to go to a previous page, it first goes back to the top of that page, then jumps to where on the page I was before... instead of going right back to where I was on that page previously.

Let's say I'm viewing a webpage with Firefox, and I scroll to the bottom on the page, then click a link. Now I'm on the new page. When I click the back button, it goes back to the top of the previous page... THEN jumps down to where I was on that page. Does anyone know why this happens? If...

Grabbing video from my camcorder and Tivo (directV)

If your camcorder has video inputs, you can connect your TIVO to the camcorder and record it to a tape. Then capture that tape with your computer. I'm assuming you have a MiniDV camcorder and a Firewire input on your computer. If not, then the answer is still out there...

CD/DVD Printing

I have an Epson R200 and have never had any problems with it. Prints CDs right out of the box. In fact, that's mostly what I print with it. Or, you can buy the Canon IP4300, then have to buy the CD tray separate then modify the printer?

Is there a way to rip DVDs without losing quality

Rip the main movie with DVD Shrink, and save it to the hard drive. You'll get the VIDEO_TS folder with VIDEO_TS.IFO all the VOBs, and you can play it on your computer with a DVD player such as PowerDVD. With no compression, it will be the same size as the movie was on the DVD... 4-8 gb.

Good idea. MiniDV is the way to go. Hard drive camcorders compress the data a lot as soon as you shoot it... and so does DVD. Tapes will give you the best picture for now. Good luck on the proposal!!!

And don't forget that Firewire has a sustained transfer rate, which is perfect for video. USB has too much overhead, and was ever intended for video transfer. USB looks faster on paper... but Firewire is technically faster because if its architecture.

Firewire is the standard way to get MiniDV into the computer. All video editing apps support it. Basically, it plays the tape and records it into the computer... as a perfect copy of the tape. Get a Firewire card. You won't regret it.

You'd probably never notice the difference between their image quality. The Elura has more other features to make it more expensive. The biggest problem will be showing SD video on an HDTV. MiniDV is always 720x480, and your TV is 1280x720. Those Canons claim to offer true widescreen...

That's a good idea, but at 13gb per hour, it will eat up hard drive space quickly, for just archiving. Just keep your tapes somewhere safe. I have all my tapes in a plastic box.... I need to get a safe or fireproof lockbox. There is a pic above in an earlier post.

It isn't exactly "legal" to make a copy of a rented movie to watch later. The hardest part is going from a DVD to a file. There is a huge conversion process going from a DVD to an AVI file. Although there are solutions... it's still a sometimes difficult process. Possible solutions...

Anyone else have a comment on buzzing idle Seagate drives? I have 2 Seagates, and I'm seriously considering switching brands to eliminate an idle buzz... My new WD drive doesn't make any "extra" noise when it's just idling.

I figure this would be a good place to ask this... I have a Seagate 7200.7 120gb drive and a 7200.8 250gb drive. Both of them suffer from an idle buzz. I read about it on the web and it happens to other people as well. Whenever there is no activity, the disk will make a slight buzz sound...

any recommendations for camcorder under $800

You've found the problem with small consumer digital camcorders.... they use tiny chips to capture light, and some do it very poorly. I have the Panasonic PV-GS200, and it does fairly well. I usually shoot in great light, on stages and auditoriums, or outdoors. Not many camcorders will record...

And then have it do what? Just look at it on the screen, or record it with DVR type functions? If you just want remote viewing over the web, a network capable webcam should do that... that might be a direction to shoot for. Otherwise, you'll be getting into the professional CCTV range.

Most digital camcorders record onto tape, MiniDV tape... and only record stills and short clips to memory cards. Tape is still your best option for recording video... it's cheap and you get one hour on each tape. You'll be able to edit the footage from a MiniDV camcorder with any video...
