Whom is still rocking an Athlon / Phenom II (even X6), or a Core2Duo/Quad? X58 users too.

main and only pc is: 45nm E8400 @ 3GHz, doesn't OC very well so after mobo battery died it reset my modest OC, haven't bothered changing from stock since except for a slight undervolt. 55nm radeon 4850 512mb underclocked/volted most of the time, the clockspeeds seem to be irrelevant for most...

What is your indentation preference ?

Allman. I never omit braces as I want the linear structure to stay universal. An indentation of 2 spaces. For heavy macro usage that others don't need to read I may switch to a wall of code style that is more like encoding than writing. As long as it remains systematic enough.

    Linux Mint, Poor Performance!

There are plenty of lighter variants than Mint+MATE. You can see some charts here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/517413/how-do-ubuntu-flavors-compare-regarding-resource-consumption-and-performance One step down from that, and not really ugly, would be something Xfce based like Xubuntu...

Microsoft blocks Windows update on Windows 7/8.1 from working with Kabylake and Ryzen

I don't understand why some bash win7 so much here, it is under support and it is not an experimental OS like w10 seems to be. The OS is a cornerstone of the stability of your system and it is the last thing you want to play with if you are actually using your computer. The note that not...

Help me with my problem (aka what CPU should I keep)

Future-proofing with current tech doesn't usually pay off. I would usually pick whatever is best for me right now, but I'm okay with not playing the latest and most demanding games as well.. I would probably go with the 7700k. It really depends on your workload though. If there is that one app...

    Windows 10 that's EXACTLY like Windows 7

Is Windows 10 most pointless upgrade for gaming?

For normal users sticking with win7 makes sense as it is a mature gaming OS and it receives security updates. Hopefully linux will be competitive enough in 2020s as Microsoft's current direction seems awful. Interesting to see how AMD's open source gpu drivers will improve by then, along with...

Should one start learning programming from assembly?

In short, only learn asm if you need to use it, as it differs between processors. If you like how it sounds, but have no use for it, learn C instead. asm is not hard and works pretty much like you'd expect.

SATA cable or port causing corruption; how to verify source?

I used to have some very slight corruption (eg files redownloading because checksums failed) and there were some suspicious errors in windows event viewer (but not many) from normal use. All the errors stopped when I changed either the SATA cable or the SATA port or both of the OS HDD. It has...

    LinX & IBT

Sounds fine to me. LinX seems to find memory instability faster or as fast as HCI memtest, so it seems to be a good test for CPU/NB/RAM alone. I don't think I'll ever need more than LinX and FurMark for stress testing purposes.

Am I the only one who like the old standard (4:3)?

My S-IPS LP2065 4:3 1600x1200 is fine for what I do, no movies, turn based strategy and RPGs. For FPS I use CRT for the proper response. I guess there are more games that won't support WS resolution than games that won't support 4:3, so 4:3 wins there. For me the screen area has nothing to do...

    Asus HD4850 MEMIO reaches threshold

It should have lower voltage&clocks when idle.. ATT will show the clocks/voltage of the mode that was on when the "overclock" panel was opened.. the values set will however stick in both modes, once set.

    E7200 degradation

Are all hard drives this noisy?

I am more irritated by the system fan noise (from 2xScythe S-Flex @ 800rpm) and the fan noise/other noise from my Corsair 550VX PSU than the noise that my Samsung Spinpoint T166 320GB 7200rpm HDD emits. It chirps a bit when idle, but it's not irritating nor can I hear it unless I get closer to...

does the everest reading vary? (under load etc) if it doesn't, i would guess CPU-Z. in any case 1.31 is 1.3125 rounded, so it sounds like the "supposed" voltage instead of actual.

CPU Overclocking, Vcore MAX myths and truth

If we assume that your CPU crashes when voltage gets too low, then these oscillations are important. LLC on has higher differences between highest and lowest actual voltage. When comparing settings where idle voltages are the same, other with LLC on, other with LLC off, LLC makes your CPU run...

well my method was: 1. Lower vcore in BIOS one or more steps 2. Boot to windows xp 3. prime95 for a short while (~2min), then back to 1. eventually when i reached instability points it was almost always the windows booting that gave black screen and reboot, only once did it successfully...

    best drivers for Geforce 2?

How do you lower cpu temps after OCing

Lower speed and/or lower voltage means less heat. Easiest thing to do is to lower the voltage manually. At some point you will start losing stability, so the optimal voltage is a bit over that. To measure stability you want to stress the processor.. and preferably check for errors. Of course if...

    Question about CPU FSB?

the answer was not yes or no, it was if. without knowing which motherboard you have (manufacturer and model), it's difficult to know the answer. luckily you are able to browse the internet, and seek for the web site of your motherboard manufacturer. you may find a list of supported processors...

Unimpressed with all this new hardware

If you buy new hardware rarely enough, you will always get impressed after buying. I think we will still see great improvement when it comes to heat/noise/power consumption. Question about CPU FSB?

Uh.. there are plenty of socket 775 processors that have default FSB of 800, my Celeron 420 is one example. But yes, motherboard manufacturer's support page should have a list of supported processors. If the chipset is older, it may still support newer processors after a BIOS update. RAM...

    Passively cooled 4850?

In your situation I would stay with the 8800GTS with no doubt.. don't waste money, work and time for such a tiny improvement. 4850 is ideal with S1 + slow fan. I have 4850+S1 and little airflow (less than typical "passive" however), 50C idle/80C load, which seems to be among the worst...

How accurate are the temps from CPUID's Hardware monitor?

The branch structure shows the source. It should offer both if available. My motherboard sensor is Winbond W83627DHG so it lists all information read by it under "Winbond W83627DHG" branch. My processor sensor reading is under "Intel Celeron 420" branch and graphics card sensor reading is under...

    Q8200 R0, M1 Stepping. What's the diff?

R0 is like E0. M1 is like C1. At least based on the CPUID String. I'd pick the R0 for overclocking. If you're not overclocking, you might want to pick any of the boxed versions (M1), as they come with a cooler..

E0 Stepping clocking results collection (Q9650, E8600 etc)

Have you tried Linpack (or intelburntest as a frontend to it)? 24/7 is too vague. I'll add it if you specify some kind of stability test and if you do, please specify the vcore you get when that particular stability test loads the cpu. That's 18 hours of prime blend, right?

    Underclocking the 4850

Well I lost the video signal after undervolting it below ~1V, so I guess the stock voltage is already low enough. No need to touch that. Basically underclocking the card to 160/500 saves you few degrees and that's all. It's easy to try to do complex plans before you have the hardware, but after...

    [Retired] The LCD Thread

HP LP2065 is 20" 1600x1200 resolution S-IPS with noticeable input lag (in 3D shooters) and matte finish anti-glare (which is not a good thing unless reflections cannot be avoided - grey especially shows some scattering of light). Pixel pitch is small and overall suits slower games very well.
