1and1 is what I use for hosting. The cheap package is only $3/month (year subscription), gives 5GB webspace, and 250GB transfer. Also includes 1 free domain. For $5/month you get double that, plus extra tools. Control panel for admin stuff isn't too bad either.

Should i go GIGABIT? & Can i use shielded Cat5e

Thinking of jumping into networking as a possible career path, what is good to know?

Is winxp professional right for this system?

v.90 or v.92 dial-up

From a quick google of v.90 & v.92, it looks like v92 is a bit faster. Supposedly there is faster uploads with v.92, and the connection time is a bit reduced over v.90. Call your ISP first to ensure that they actually support v.92 (or v.90, though it looks like most do already).

recommendation for partitions

I don't think I can answer all of your questions...but i'll give it a shot. Having seperate partitions for everything but your OS is mainly for organization. If you have your OS on a different partition, it could make retrieving files easier if your OS goes bad on you. You could in theory...

Service Pack 2 Gaming Impact?

If you run before and after benchmark tests, you might notice. Realistically though...nope. I haven't noticed any difference. Like Jambo said, you can just turn them off.

What's the difference between these ram models?

Depends if your board can handle it, or if you're going to overclock it. going from 2.5 to 2 only gives a few % increase in performance if i remember correctly. So if you're going to OC a lot, i'd go with 4400. If you're not at all, stick with the 3200.

What's the difference between these ram models?

No idea. if you zoom in on the chips, the numbering on the chips looks like the same on both. Can't say for sure though since it gets kinda blurry. It isn't the same picture either, as the model corresponds correctly too. Only difference I can see is that the cheaper one is in stock!

laptop hard drive died, i need the data

If you have access two another computer, I would recommend downloading Knoppix, and booting that. If it sees the HDD, you can use a windows share to transfer the files over to. Use smb://ipaddress/foldername on the laptop running Knoppix, ip address being the other computer, and the foldername...

what's the bext gaming mouse out there??

I was using a version 1 intellimouse explorer until it died recently. Nice mouse, big buttons, very comfortable. I replaced it with a MX510, which I like quite a bit. The scroll buttons on it are a nice touch, though it's got a different feel to it. Haven't had any problems with it though...

JBoots came with the starter kit, not the collectors edition. Still though, don't get the CD version...it's 10 cds :confused:

I had the same problem as the poster. I ordered a wireless card from them, and it just sat in the pending status for two weeks, so i canceled it. It arrived at my house a week after that, and was billed to my credit card two months after. It was only a 20 dollar card, so i didn't really care...

PCIe x16 vs PCI & AGP

pci-e does not use a shared bus like previous pci. AGP had its own bus, so the difference is that it's can handle more data. Anandtech article

SATA, IDE & RAID?

While i've never installed a sata drive, from what i've read you just have to be extremely careful with the cable, otherwise you can break the connector. Also, when installing windows, when it asks for raid drivers make sure to hit f6 and install the sata controller drivers so Windows can see...

Geforce 6800 AGP to PCI-Express HSI interconnect

If i'm not mistaken that means that nvidia is designing the chip based around PCI-E, so that it does not require a bridge to use with PCI-E. However, they can toss in a bridge to the card to make it compatable with AGP.

can't see a hard drive in win98se...

odds are his hard drive's file system is using NTFS, the default file system for Windows NT/2k/xp. Windows 98se uses FAT32, and does not have support to read ntfs.

i can't say from experience so anyone can correct me...but you may have to hit f6 when it's doing the initial startup, and install the drivers for the sata controller card. first thought /shrugs

Will a klipsch sub work without speakers?

On my klipsch's the volume is controlled by the front right speaker...the cabling goes: computer - right speaker controls - subwoofer - back out to the speakers. And it has an input plug similar to the midi cirlce deal. don't know if that helps, sorry if it doesn't heh

device failure

download new ones, from the laptops i've worked on with the ati mobilities, reinstalling the same driver usualy doesn't help. uninstall/reinstall in safe mode.

yes, the access point would pass on any dhcp requests to your schools dhcp server. I would highly recommend contacting your network administrators / help desk before doing this. I work for my universities telecommunications & networking department, and if anyone gets caught using an access...

I've been getting quite a few calls today (i do tech support for a university). Lots of people getting emails saying there's a picture of them naked w/ the attatchment (most of them have been zip). something new i'm guessing. fun part is that the emails are spoofed to look like other users in...
