AGP Apature size

128MB is optimal if you have 512MB+ of RAM. Dont go higher unless you want to waste your RAM. There were benchmarks done on the subject (google it..). Going higher than 128MB didn't actually yield better results.

Do you overclock you GPU??

I wouldn't o/c if you're satisfied with the perf. you get. Getting 5 extra fps may not be noticeable, and you push it too hard, you'll lose in stability.

LuckyStrike1, 3,800 for a 9600XT is actually pretty good. I was using a BBA 9600 pro a little while ago and scored around that range.

safe CPU temps?

yeah, 70C is the max. high operating temp for Intel P4 (see their web site for details).

top power supplies

I'd go with a Thermaltake Silent PurePower 480W (you're actually getting 550w). i'm very satisfied with it, voltages are very stable. I've heard problems with Antec PSUs.

what temp does a cpu run at while gaming?

51C when running UT2k3, Freelancer,.. for a few hours. Idle it goes down to 35C.

Question about stock CPU heat

Your temps seem about right (idle could probably be a bit lower). As long as your cpu temp is below 70C you have nothing to worry about. Check the Intel web site for maximum temps your P4 can handle.

Get the 9800Pro, the performance gains are well worth the price difference.

9800 Pro on an older computer

Go for it. I recently upgraded my older rig (i845G, 400FSB) with a 9800xt (from a 9600pro). Amazing difference!! scored 3,800 on 3Dmark03 before (~10,000 with 3DMark2001), and now above 6100 (3dMark03) and ~15000 on 3DMark2001. Gameplay is smooth as silk using 1200 x 1024, 4XAA, 4XAF, Vsynch...

Problem Solved!...ATI Radeon 9600XT - 3D games either freeze up or play so slowly that they are vertually unplayable.

Check also if the video card conflicts with anything else, the audio card for example. Run msinfo32.exe, see status under IRQs, Conflicts, etc.. Hope this helps.

Good DVD Player w/ region hack & PAL -> NTSC?

Bought a cheapy one, AWD S99 at CircuitCity ($35) a few months ago. The unit can easily be changed to region free. Outputs NTSC, PAL, PAL60. Plays anything (DVD-R, DVD+RW, VCD, MP3, CD with Mpeg on it, you name it). So far I'm extreme happy with it. Picture quality is near perfect in PAL60.

Yeah, upgrade to a 9800 Pro or something in that range, and you'll get much higher scores.

3dmark03: is ~10% worth it?

Depends largely on the applications used. Benchmarks dont reflect reality. The best way to test is to run the app and see. I was using a BBA 9600pro and had perf. problems with CAD tools. they went away after upgrading to a 9800.

Torn on which video card . . .

Go with a Radeon rather than NVidia (best performances from what I've seen). The 9800 pro is a great card, way superior in perf. to the 9600 XT. I used a 9600Pro before (scored ~3,700 on 3DMark03), gameplay was okay but not that smooth (UT2003, Freelancer, Half Life). Upgraded to a 9800XT...

3D Mark 2001 and games crashing :(

Before running the test, make sure to disable AA & AF from the ctrl panel, terminate a few services (system tray, task manager) no needed by windows, get the latest video drivers, install the latest chipset drivers. Hope this helps.

Your score is a little bit low. I've been getting ~6,100 with a 9800XT on a 2.6A GHz, 400FSB chipset. Yours should be higher that that.

Best headphones to get

Sennheiser is definitely one of the top choices for music and gameplay. I own the HD497. Great quality/price ratio. The sound is far superior to anything else I've tested. Highly recommended.

Low Aquamark3 score... 4x vs. 8x make that big a difference?

Yeah, that sound very low. With my P4 2.6A, everything at stock, I get Aquamark scores in the 36,000-38,000 range. What are you getting with 3DMark03? Also, make sure to disable services that you don't need (see System Tray, Task manager) before running the tests.

9600 Pro 3dMark03 scores?

With a BBA 9600 Pro, my 3DMark03 scores were in the 3,600 -3,700 range. Based on your rig, what you're getting is probably in the ball park.

3Dmark03 scores low w/ 9800 pro - o/c 2500+

Agree with previous tips. Also, make sure to unload/stop all services you don't need before running the test (see System tray and Task Manaer if you're running Windows). Also, check you PSU (maybe a little undersized for a 9800Pro)

Best ATI based Radeon 9800XT 256mb

Go for it! I'm using a BBA 9800 XT, fastest card I've ever owned (check the reviews for benchmarks). On my rig (i845 400FSB see below), I went from a 3dMark03 score of 3,800 with a 9600Pro to over 6,000 with the 9800XT. Also, people sometime report that the card gets real hot. I haven't...

Probably a very stupid question about mounting a heatsink on an Intel CPU

If you want to use the stock thermal pad, be sure to peel off the protective label. My recommendation is also to remove the pad all together and apply a good thermal compund (arctic silver 3 gave me very good results w/CPU temps between 32 to 49C). Hope this helps

I got pretty good results with a Vanted aeroflow HSF. CPU temps stay b/w 35 to 49C and noise is acceptable.

Modern Video Cards

For best gameplay performances (according to reviews and personal experience), I'd go with a Radeon 9800 Pro or XT. Prices on the 9800 pro has dropped a bit. dgerard

Wow.. Went from a 10,300 to a 11,800 in 3dMark2001 with the change from a 9500 PRO to a 9800 PRO

Agree, your scores are kinda low for a 9800 Pro. Roughly that's what I had with a 9600Pro, before upgrading to a 9800XT beast...
