  1. Sudden, intense headache from heavy lifting

Go to a PT first, even if you get the MRI, you can go to a PT once a week over a month out of pocket before what you'd pay for an MRI (with insurance covering it). Hospitals love to make money. I'm comparing CAT scan prices to MRI but I recently had a coworker's husband get an MRI (for no...
  2. rest more between sets to get more reps, or less rest and less reps

I never mentioned not building a foundation in strength first. However, if his goals are sarcoplasmic hypertrophy...weight numbers are far less relative than time under tension (for body building). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Mj8o2WMGoE&feature=player_detailpage#t=45s (Kai Green on weight...
  3. rest more between sets to get more reps, or less rest and less reps

Building muscle mass and building strength are different. That's why the starting strength and the 5x5 programs use a lower rep range while the bodybuilding programs use the higher rep ranges with lower weights and shorter rest periods.
  4. Torn Labrum

Not sure how your form on the bench was prior to having your shoulder problems. I was having issues with mine for a while and changed my bench form up to match this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=oizAS9gfIwo#t=135s and it's pretty much taken all of the stress off my...
  5. Day Z alpha: How the zombie apocalypse should be

How can they be remapped? I can't find any setting within the game to select another key for replacing the mouse wheel. I just spent 30 minutes staring at an alice pack I couldn't pickup since I can't cycle through the inventory menu which was my initial fear about buying the game from the get...
  6. Day Z alpha: How the zombie apocalypse should be

Thanks for the information, I'll probably check it out now that I know I won't have issues playing it!
  7. Day Z alpha: How the zombie apocalypse should be

Is it possible to remap the controls to navigate the inventory menus without using a mouse wheel? Interested in the game but I don't use a mouse that has a scroll wheel.
  8. Need some recommendations on back pain

Not saying you have the issues I did but all of your symptoms are largely the same. My issues were caused by, until a few years ago, a lifetime of bad posture and having a salaried desk job (lots of sitting). My right low back pain was my quadratus lumborum (QL) being locked in spasm due...
  9. Front Squat vs Back Squat

Haven't tried this myself yet but it's made me want to go buy some wrist straps to give it a whirl as it seems like an excellent way to do the front squat. Featured in the first part of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVTkbggmxR0
  10. Fish Oil

Not aware of the downsides of taking it and it's rather affordable compared to many other supplements. I don't eat much fish myself so take it for that reason.
  11. Am I loosing my mind? What a fitness instructor told me today..

Sorry thought you were doing 2 a day everyday, that's really not too bad then. I agree with SC that you're eating too few calories but I'm not going to argue with what's working for you. If you can workout regularly and run on that few calories you're obviously mentally tough so once you get...
  12. Am I loosing my mind? What a fitness instructor told me today..

Only thing I'd be concerned about is how much sugar you're taking in. The protein bars are usually pretty bad with sugar, and in that case you'd be way better off just going with whey powder. That G2 is 4 servings in 1 bottle, so 20grams of sugar there in a low calorie drink. For me, I...
  13. Need some recommendations on preventing grip loss during inclined flys.

I have harbringer gloves myself. I originally bought them because I had dumbbells with some ridiculous knurling on them so I used them until I developed an even callous on my hand. It may not seem like they'd make a big difference but it is more work to grip with the gloves on than not. If...
  14. Need some recommendations on preventing grip loss during inclined flys.

The gloves are increasing the diameter of the bar you're gripping which requires more effort to hold onto, this will fatigue your grip faster. You can use some thin garden gloves as a better alternative if sweating is that big of an issue or you don't want to use chalk.
  15. Lightheaded when lifting weights

Focus on your breathing and if you don't think that's it (after focusing on it), maybe rest a bit longer between sets.
  16. Pre-workout supplements... why do they always make me crap immediately?

My workouts go a lot better when I don't have to worry about sharting myself. I've never had a pre-workout supplement do anything other than make me feel terrible and then enjoy a night a diarrhea. Both of which actually results in me working out less and less effectively. Have no issues...
  17. Round 2 of surgery!

Since it wasn't found on the CAT scan he believed it could had been too small to have been viewed on it. He mentioned if after getting in there they didn't find anything they could still put in a meshing for support.
  18. Round 2 of surgery!

Poor posture can be a killer, we're really not meant to be in a seated position for hours and hours on end. I only wish that the importance was hammered into me at a much earlier age as with any bad habit, they are hard to break. Stretching, correcting posture, taking miniature breaks...
  19. Right hand fingers losing sensation, feeling cool

Most likely nerve related and not blood flow. It's probably ulnar nerve entrapment to some degree of some sort (if you wanted a likely name for your symptom). I have the same symptom and it's triggered usually from computer usage. Look up some tennis elbow stretches and if those don't work...
  20. Preventing water up the nose!

I...don't inhale while under water. Not sure how else to explain it, if it's that big a deal just get a nose clip.
  21. Loose skin from weight loss

Beyond cosmetic surgery you can try adding muscle to reduce how dramatic it looks. It would take a hell of a lot of muscle to tighten up that kind of slack. I was in a similar position to yours losing a bit more than 100lbs but I was in my early 20's. Even then, it took adding about 40lbs of...
  22. Squats with tight hamstrings/hips

Why do you recommend foam rolling prior to stretching, versus stretching then foam rolling? I'm just curious as I've done both in each order but would like to know the benefit. Appreciate the input. As far as the stretches themselves, google "piriformis stretch" there's several ways to...
  23. Squats with tight hamstrings/hips

I agree with SC, it's likely not your hamstrings. Mine are ridiculously tight and I don't have an issue going below parallel on a squat. That is provided I'm keeping my hips/glutes in order (having a desk job doesn't help). You mention doing hamstring stretches but are you doing any...
  24. Worth it to buy weight equipment?

Really disagree with this. I've always gotten more work done at home because of fewer distractions and saving two hours from not driving. I've always worked out at home and for several years now I've had my lifts running on a timer. It would be awfully hard for me to rest for a short, timed...
  25. Enteric Coated fish oil costs 4x more than non-enteric coated!?

The enteric coating allows it to bypass your stomach and get broken down/absorbed within your small intestine. I believe with some vitamins/supplements you'll lose some of nutrients during the breakdown in your stomach which is why the enteric coated fish oil only lists 1 as the serving. I...
  26. few questions.. work out everyday is ok? And benchpress reps?

Probably more appropriate to figure out your goals so some one can better answer your questions. Why are you running? Why are you lifting? Appearance, performance, weight loss, muscle gain? What's more important? I personally dislike running. If I were to pretend I was a person that liked...
  27. Hurt neck...

You can get custom made pillows as well, I have one I was measured for by my Naprapath from foot levelers: http://www.footlevelers.com/products/cervical_support_pillows.php
  28. Worth it to buy weight equipment?

http://chicago.craigslist.org/sox/spo/2281385293.html 520lbs in olympic plates at $.45/lb ($234). Not as cheap as a year membership at $18/month but would be cheaper after the second year.
  29. Worth it to buy weight equipment?

Worth it to me. 300lb olympic set for about $180 off of CL (can be found even cheaper if patient or willing to drive a bit). I have low ceilings in my basement so an open power rack is ideal. Never found one used (finding a full rack is much easier) but brand new is $350-$500. For me, being...
  30. Worth it to buy weight equipment?

Just need a rack with safety pins.
  31. Tendonitis in the wrist

I get significant tendonitis in my right wrist and to a lesser extent my left. Inflammation doesn't "hurt" but it is incredibly irritating. I have a hard time describing what it feels like and this doesn't feel adequate but it's the best that comes to mind--somewhat itchy and burning. It's...
  32. Winged scapula, am I screwed? advice, suggestions?

When you went for the EMG test did they do a NCV (Nerve Conduction Velocity) test as well? I was under the assumption that they generally do both when testing (that was my experience anyways). If you haven't had a NCV test that would be what would test specifically for nerve damage.
  33. How do you 'take a break?'

I have a cheat meal once a week usually. You can still have a burger and pizza while on a diet in my opinion so long as you're not putting yourself into a calorie surplus. I personally would have a hard time going on a very strict diet for 3 months and then doing 1-2 weeks of splurging...
  34. Deadlift ... hands can't handle the weight.

What do you mean exactly by hand fatigue OP? Does the weight just start slipping out of your hands? Does it start slipping from your non dominant hand first? Also how tall are you? When I started deadlifting my left hand was my limiting factor, being right handed the left one was just...
  35. Just messed up my back squatting

A good way to apply the ice to your lower back(and rest it in general)is to use a position like this: I prefer having my legs elevated, I get more contact with an icepack on my lower back using that position.
  36. Upgrade advice from 8800GT

Thanks for the program recommendation, it was very useful. It's never hitting 100%, highest was 66% average is about 33% with typical spikes of 50-55%. Highest amount of memory being used is 320. Seeing that I figured I'd look at my CPU and disabled my distributed computing application...
  37. Upgrade advice from 8800GT

Have not tried overclocking yet. I have enabled the multi-core support but didn't notice a difference in FPS.
  38. Upgrade advice from 8800GT

Thanks, I've lowered every setting but the resolution. I'll give that a shot.
  39. Upgrade advice from 8800GT

Thanks, no current oc on the CPU -- I know I should be able to get a pretty sizable one on there but never bothered. What kind of performance increase going from a 8800 to a 460 should I expect? Thanks again.
  40. Upgrade advice from 8800GT

I have a Q6600 on a Gigabyte P35-DS3L with 4gB of ram. I mostly play TF2 at 1920x1080 and get some pretty bad video lag in 32 player maps. Is my CPU the bottleneck in this situation or the card? And if it's the card what would be a good pairing with my current configuration? Thanks in...
