It's a $70 Antec case. Like I said, I run a joystick out of it and never had a problem, but I see how a joystick is a much easier load than an iPod.

Well, when I was using the front port, I was able to transfer files to the iPod using Explorer just fine (at least a couple small ones). Now that I've switched to the back port, I haven't had a single problem and iTunes works fine for me. I've heard other people say bad things about iTunes...

I guess it could be, but the computer knew something was hooked up to it (and I do use the other front one for a joystick), so I doubt it. Although this is the only time I've used the front ones (except the joystick) since I built this PC.

Linksys vs. Dlink wireless routers

Well, in the month since I posted this, I've had no problems with my Belkin router. I bought a Netgear USB wireless adapter for the other computer in my network and on Win ME, the software kept eating system resources to the point that the system would crash within 5-10 mins of restarting it...

Of course you guys are right, a fresh install would be the best option and if this were my computer I wouldn't hesitate to do it. The problem is it's a Compaq machine and she doesn't have the XP disc (if it even came with it), so I was going to try a repair install, but using my retail XP cd...

So it booted up in safe mode. I tried disableing all the start up items and the system still wouldn't boot in normal mode. I tried running an online virus scan and it found like 35 viruses, so I figured that would solve it, but it still wouldn't load. I ran Adaware incase it was spyware...

Why does XP think I have a floppy drive even though I don't??

So I built a new system and installed XP home fresh. I decided I didn't need a floppy drive anymore, so I left it out. Strangely though, XP still lists it in Explorer. Even if I go into Device Manager, it shows up as Floppy Disk Drive and I think it's funny that if I click on it and choose...

How to tell if a Win XP CD has been activated?

I searched and searched and I did find a tech support line, but you only get 2 calls and then they charge you after that. I couldn't find an activation number.

Interestingly enough, I just installed 98 on an old computer I'm selling and it was a whopping 119 mb! That's a pretty big jump from 98 to XP (over 10x!).

I'm trying to fix my sis-in-laws PC and I think I fixed her first problem - it was an unmountable boot volume error, so I found the fix on the MS site and I ran chkdsk /r and fixboot from the XP recovery console. At lease it doesn't BSOD on boot, but now it boots up to just past the welcome...

Thanks, but it's already set up to boot from CD and floppy before the hard drive, so it SHOULD be able to boot from the CD, it just won't.

This is the problem, I can't get the recovery console to load. The only thing I can think is that both the CD drive and floppy drive are bad, but that seems unlikely to happen at the same time. I may throw in some spares I have to see if I can get it to read the xp cd to load the recovery...

I'm pretty sure that the position on the cable has nothing to do with master/slave (maybe I'm wrong), I thought it was the jumper setting. That's why if I know which Location # went with master and which with slave, I could link up the manufacturer of the drive to master or slave and then check...

I don't think I was clear. It never got through the booting off the CD or floppy, so I never got to the prompt where you could enter in the chkdsk commands.

I could not get into the bios. It was set to read from CD and then floppies, but I tried both and it looked like it was trying to read from them, but then went on even though they were windows bootable media.

Hard Drive Location Number and Master/Slave

I have 2 hard drives (C and D) and don't know which is which - they are both 40 gb too. In the device manager, one is location 0 (0) and the other is 1 (1), I'm assuming 0 is master and 1 is slave, correct? Then I could use the jumper settings on the drives to figure out which is which. Thanks

Anyone? Well now I'm confused because even with the Netgear software not loaded, you can still access the internet. I have WEP encryption on and I figured you need that software to enter your key. I don't get why I can still access the internet? Although, since the program isn't running...

Well, I've isolated it to the Netgear USB wireless adapter. I restarted the computer without that loading up and the system resources was at 94% and it stayed there for about 30 mins when I checked it again. I then loaded up the Netgear software and within 5 - 10 mins., the system resources...
