My Wireless Connection isn't working!

This has nothing to do with installing a new router. XP cannot configure your wireless adapter because some other software is doing it. Use that software to configure it to connect to your new router.

Windows Boot Woes

Adding the other boot entry to the boot disc allows me to boot that install. After I replaced hal.dll it wants me to reinstall all my devices :(. But why can't I boot from the hard drive? Why do I have to use a boot disc?

Wifi Internet down, but AIM and my network still works>:o

Sounds to me like connections which are already established are staying connected, and cached DNS entries are able to resolve, while new DNS requests fail to resolve because your DNS servers could not be contacted. Investigate DNS settings. Ping DNS servers.

External Drive connected to two systems?

Actually, text files are formatted different on Macs and PCs, so in effect, they are the ONLY thing that would have problems. :) You could also create a network directly between the 2 computers in the same room with a crossover cable, or a regular ethernet cable if one of the computers can...

installing linux without a cd?

They are entirely possible. You can boot off floppies to do this, but you have to hunt down the floppies, and it is probably very slow. What I do is boot off of the FC4 repair CD, then point it to a network install kickstart file. Doing a full install over the internet... takes about as long...

Very simple network issue, probably with Sygate!

Verify they are on the same workgroup. Verify they are on the same subnet. Verify both have firewalls disabled or ports open for file sharing. Try using \\whatever.computer.ip.adddr\folder instead.

How can I give one xp pro computer account permissions on another xp pro machine?

You can try adding MACHINE_NAME\Username to the permissions for the folder you want to grant access to. Though, that's more of a domain thing.

System won't boot, no video, no keyboard.. how to troubleshoot?

Start with a motherboard, cpu, and power supply. Does it turn on? Add ram. Does it turn on? Add video card. Then HD, then CDROM, then peripherals. Try that?

Where can I find HP driver printers without the bloatware?

Well you can disable the programs from running, when they are closed they don't use any RAM... the trouble is for me installing new printers (which I do all the time), the drivers take 20-25 minutes per computer. I used to be able to find small drivers on their website back when they didn't...

Seems like you would need 64 bit drivers on the clients and 32 bit drivers on the server. But will they talk to each other? Who knows...

wrt54g and dhcp ip problems

the 169 address comes from windows when it times out attempting a DHCP lease. Clearly the DHCP service on your router is failing, and rebooting fixes it. I don't know why this would happen other than faulty router software/hardware. If your workaround is not satisfactory, you can try manually...

No, you should not be. It makes wireless much much cleaner. And this is exactly why everyone needs to configure their routers properly. No default SSIDs with no encryption!

If when you are getting disconnected it says that is has connected to a different network, then yes, that is what is causing you to lose your connection. Otherwise, if the 2 networks are on the same channel, they may be interfering with each other, and causing a poor signal. Turn off automatic...

do routers with mimo technology still slow down to the slowest device on the network?

Did any ever do that? As far as I know, between a G router and B client, you will get B speeds, but all the other clients still get whatever speed they want...

But basically if you have a router, you probably already have both computers set up to have internet access, and if they are setup for this then they are also basically setup for windows file sharing already, as well. Just open up file sharing in the firewalls of both computers.

The cables will be limited to the speed of the router as well as the amount of traffic travelling through the router, whereas connecting 2 gigabit computers with a direct link will be up to 10 times faster than using a router.
