It may not always just be a file server though.... I'm still trying to decide if I just want to throw a little more money into components and load ESX server on it instead.... this way I have a nice test/production box.
Yea,
I've also been looking at Dell's entry level SC server to use and just upgrade the drives. I'll have to see if the price gets any better next Thursday or if some coupons surface.
Thanks for the replies thus far guys. As far as the OS I have access to anything I want for the most part. However, I plan on running 2003 Server Standard Edition. There will be no additional cost for the OS, so I didn't mention it in my original post.
I'm looking for some suggestions on building up a cheap home server. I want to keep this project under $500 total. What would you guys/gals suggest? The box will function mainly as a file server and I want to run a mirrored pair of drives say no less than 250GB and 1 to 2 GB of ram. My main...
I never said I was abusing the system smart guy. I was a college student when I made the purchase and I still continue to take classes from time to time, I was just pointing out that they did not require any proof whatsoever when I had purchased mine online.
You don't have to be a student to get the education discount. I bought my 2Gen 10GB Ipod a couple years ago from their website by just clicking through the Education tab. No verification whatsoever unless they have changed something....

Yea my 400SC showed up earlier today. Only took 1 day since I am in Houston! :-) I threw in a 120gb drive and the 1GB ram and loaded Windows 2003 server. I'm letting it burn in over the weekend I guess since I plan on calling in sick tomorrow to go play some golf! :-)

I left them in my desk drawer at work so I will have to double check tomorrow, BUT I did look at them when I opened the box and I didn't see anything that destinguished it as ECC.

I didn't need one either, but I jumped on the deal! :-)

Thanks JmsAndrsn for the tracking info also...

Not sure when it ends, but I checked my order this morning and it says that it shipped! Still waiting for the tracking number to show up. I am hoping to get it by Friday, but we'll have to see.

Yea from what I have read, you can over clock this CPU extremely high!!! But not with the motherboard it comes with from Dell.
Linky for overclocking info

I guess I got in just in time. I purchased a few hours ago and at the time it was still $125. Surely they will work with you if you call them. Good Luck!

I went ahead and picked 1 up about an hour ago. No real need for it at the moment, but for the money I will slap 2003 server on it and find something for it to do. I think I have a few gig of ram lying around the office for it as well as a new 120gb drive I have been saving in my desk. ;)
