recommend a external 2.5in hd enclosure

I just picked up a 2.5" HD enclosure from ST Lab. Cost me $30 Canadian (24 USD) that seems to work great. Runs off the USB power.

CPU Making noise!

Never heard of a CPU maing noise before...Its likely your HDD that is making the noise. Maybe run some diagnostics on it, see if it dying on you.

Monitor repair *now with 100% more pics*

I really enjoyed your article about the scannerPC. Very neat. I just happen to have an even older scanner lying around (required a ISA adapter card), and an old Dell 400MHz, that I have no more use for. You have given me an idea for a new winter project to keep me out of the wifes hair.

Do you hate Windows XP

Over all, its really a toss-up as to which is better. I think I would have to say windows 2000 though. I have XP Pro on my machine at work and 2K Pro on my 3 machines at home...Never have any problems with any of them....

What to do with P3 computer.

There are lots of "How-To" guides out there on turing an old box into a server....Toms Hardware did an extensive article on making a router/server with a linux distro. Just do a google search, you should find lots of info. Your biggest problem is likely to be deciding which distro to use

Ok so I hit my computer with my fist...

Some friends and I once too a shotgun and a semi-automatic 22 rifle to an old computer and case. Was hella fun blowing it to pieces with shotgun slugs. Turns out my sister-in-law was the best shot with the shotgun, blew the processor right out of the socket, shooting through the case.

The death of parallel and serial ports?

Parallel ports will disappear long before serial ports, if you want my opinion. Already, you have to pay a premium to get a printer with a parallel connection as opposed to a USB connection. As for serial, being an electrican who programs PLCs for a living, serial is still very widely used...

I din't know what I've done but

Sounds like an onboard diagnostic thing. Lots of motherboards have it now. Try checking your manual or the manufacturers website, there may be information on the codes there.

poor memory scores on a k8v deluxe

The problem is, if you are running 333MHz memory in a board designed for 400MHz, you are running your RAM way to slow, thats why you are getting bad scores.

What benchmarking software?

Try and find HD Tach. Its good for comparisions on HD access time. You can also get SiSoft Sandra for Burn-in as well as a host of other system information tools. If you are looking for stability testing, try Prime95.

Windows Reporting 512MB stick of RAM as 480MB

In case you didn't read his post, shich is obvious you didn't, you would know that he has a 6800 video card, not integrated video. My guess is its a bad stick of RAM. Get MemTest86 and run it, see if it shows any errors. But you'll likely want to return it anyways.

Computer hardware sellers in Canada

I tend to disagree with the fact that Canada Computers has the lowest prices. I was able to find the exact same parts, some cheaper, some the same price, at a place called LOGIC Computer House in Markham. Dropping into the mom'n'pop stores can be good sometime, as you can quite often find good...

Strange physical network question

Also depends on the length of the cables used. I had a problem where i mixed up the wires, and it would work fine, for cables ~5 feet or less. Longer than that and it didn't work. Interference between the twisted pairs. Go Figure....

Problems with New Dell Dimension 4600

Best thing to do is get on the phone with Dell tech support, tell them about your problems, and refuse to take anything less than a new card. They SHOULD send someone out to fix it, or more liekly ask you to send it back (thier cost) to be repaired. Just so you know, Dells have a switch on...

HDD housekeeping during reinstall

Personally, I would recommend maing your OS partition bigger (~20GB) and installing all your apps there. Having your games/data on a seperate partition is a good idea. I do it myself. (I have 2 120GB drives: Drive 1: 20Gb OS, 100GB Games, Drive 2: 30GB Archive (drivers, game cracks, updates...

Windows XP Pro - Need Help Please!

Put the Windows XP CD in your comp, and boot from the CD. You should get a choice to install or repair. It will look for the original installation, then repair files as necessary. All your documents, etc should be safe.

My 1999 BIOS can't detect an "ATA" 60GB drive? Or is it DOA ?

Thats an old Socket 7 Motherboard isn't it?? Definatly see if you can find an updated BIOS version, as a lot of older boards don't recognize drives over 32GB. That sounds like its your problem. If you go here http://www.epox.nl/english/support/bios/socket7.htm you can find a newer BIOS for...

SMART Error, is there a chance to save the HDD?

RMA? You can't be serious...Its a 3.2GB HDD. I've pulled bigger HDDs from the dumpster... Backup your data a get a new HDD, its not worth the time or aggrevation to save the 3.2.

Question re PC2700 and PC3200 in same comp.
