    DEAD Dell ST2410 24" 1920x1080 $189 + tax Shipped

I picked up one of those refurb Soyos from Compgeeks and ended up having to return it because the picture would randomly go black. But I miss it -- the display was gorgeous. I bought a 23" Samsung for the same price but as a TN it doesn't compare. Now, I wish I had tried for a factory repair...

Geeks Refurbished 24" Soyo LCD (possibly S-MVA) - Back in Stock!

I'm sorry to report that mine has begun to randomly blank the screen (no picture, but blue power LED remains on). A little googling and this appears to be a pretty common problem. Dang it.

Geeks Refurbished 24" Soyo LCD (possibly S-MVA) - Back in Stock!

Got mine today. It was shipped in just the box you see on Geek's page (which looked like Fedex had performed acts of cruelty on it). Fortunately, everything seems to work and I haven't spotted any dead pixels yet. There are a couple grey-ish points that stand out on a white background. I...

OMFG!!! - $98.87 for Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player at Wal-Mart - Sunday Nov. 4 is supposedly the last day

Don't be an ass. Given that I can watch a HD disc in full 1080 resolution over component video, it does not follow that a gimmicky post-process 'enhancement' of 480 content should be 'restricted' content. That's retarded.

OMFG!!! - $98.87 for Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player at Wal-Mart - Sunday Nov. 4 is supposedly the last day

I will blame Toshiba. I have a TV that will do 1080i (ironically, also Toshiba), and hundreds of legally purchased DVD's but if I want to watch them up-converted I guess should have bought from a manufacturer that cares more about pleasing customers than force feeding stupid encryption.

OMFG!!! - $98.87 for Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player at Wal-Mart - Sunday Nov. 4 is supposedly the last day

I got one but it's aggravating the hell out of me. It refuses to upconvert DVD's over component video which is pretty much what I bought it for. Why would they even care about scan doubling old content? My widescreen predates HDMI. Crummy bastards.

What is the point of Linux? (Not a flame)

I use Linux because I don't like where Microsoft has taken Windows. I don't mind paying for software but I'll be damned if I'll ask permission to use something I've bought.

World War 3 is on the horizon.

SCO tried this game (with Microsoft's backing) and it made them a pariah in the tech community. Granted, they didn't have much of a plan B going for them. What Microsoft really wants is a club to threaten spineless CTO's with -- "Nice server room ya got here. Shame if something was to...

Screwed up my Gnome Terminal launch button

Open your home folder using the desktop icon. Under the VIEW menu, check the box that says "show hidden files". You'll see a bunch of hidden folders appear (they all begin with a period). Open up ".gconf", then "apps", then "gnome-terminal", then "profiles", then "default". Should be...

    Dx10 and Vista only

I think it's funny that you can take a feature-rich OpenGL game like DOOM3 and run it on Voodoo2 from 1998: http://www.firingsquad.com/media/gallery_index.asp?media_id=244 But "super advanced" DirectX can't fall back gracefully from 10 to 9. Go go forced obsolescence. Where would...

Operating systems from a support standpoint.

One thing I hated about XP was the plethora of versions. Seems like I could never find a CD that would make someone's product key happy when they asked me to fix their spyware encrusted box. Linux is much easier in the sense you don't have to hassle with a marketing department's deranged...

Does the commend line scare you?

A GUI and the CLI are like hand signals versus verbal or written instruction. We can convey something simple very easily with just gestures -- Your spouse asks where the mail is and you point to the kitchen table. For more complex messages, it's way easier to speak than try and hand signal...

Vista drops support for HDCP in 32bit Versions

Taken from the first article: So that means Vista [HD]DVD playback will be just like XP's in that you have to get the codecs from a third-pary's software player? Sounds like something fell apart at the negotiating table.

    AIGLX rocks!

I'm only on my first cup of coffee here so ... Are you saying that 3D applications are running on your Desktop, rendering to the OpenGL hardware on your laptop? Over an encrypted link? X can pass the OpenGL rendering pipeline upstream like that? Neat.

    Is it just me...

It's funny that you make an allusion to open source as being communistic when, IMHO, it's kin to one of the founding concepts of the United States -- freedom. Photoshop is a great program and I have no problem with them charging for it. I've yet to run into a imaging need that I couldn't...

    Is it just me...

That floors me. The guy wants to remote from one computer to another and has to worry about "legal" issues. This is exactly why I'm a Linux/FOSS guy -- freedom from this kind of BS where companies sic lawyers on their own customers. No EULA's, no CAL's, no WPA, no WGA, no serial numbers...

I just did this on a Dell laptop belonging to a co-worker's daughter (gunked up with spyware/viruses). You press CTRL-F11 at the Dell logo on start up and it takes you to a recovery menu. Probably wont wok on older laptops though.

Using an old copy of Windows XP on a new computer?

EULA's are NOT contracts. There is no such thing as a contract that can have its wording changed at the whim of one party only and this is not the only metric where they fail. There's a very good reason they are called "agreements" and not "contracts". EULA's are a way to deceive customers...

Using an old copy of Windows XP on a new computer?

Please don't infer that these consumer-abusive EULA's are the same thing as laws. Blindly permitting your rights to be eroded by greedy corporations attempting to side-step the legislative process does NOT equate to being a good citizen.

Windows OS released for aging computers

How was it misinformed? Microsoft has begun to aggressively, if not alway profitably, expand into curious new markets such as would-be Google , software embedded ad agency, rent-to-own PC's in Brazil, and Software-as-a-Service (whatever that really means). They are only a couple steps...

Windows OS released for aging computers

I dunno. Tide sponsors a car but they wont sell you one. This is product for Microsoft. Apparently, you can even cluster your excel spreadsheets. Showing up once or twice and near the bottom of the Top 500 might be worse for their image than not appearing at all.

Windows OS released for aging computers

I suspect Microsoft has decided that Windows needs a presence in every venue (probably a command from Balmer) -- which includes the barely-to-non profitable, niche ones. This project is a lot like their announced cluster computing using a modifed version of 2003 server. Something I have...
