    That was indeed the ticket. Thanks Radicl. For others who might run into this, you have to dig through a set of power saving settings. There is one specifically for hard drive power usage. I turned it to its most inefficient and lo and behold..no more spin up !

    From what I've read about it, the Core 2 Duos overclock well with the stock fans that come in the retail box. So unless you're hard core overclocker, I would not bother unless you want a real quiet system. Just trying to save you some bucks.

    Any of the Core 2 Duo cpus should be fine. Dont think any of the single GPUs out there is powerful enough to be bottlenecked by the core 2 duos. Most games are bottlenecked on the GPU anyways.

    Not a bad idea, Dave. The only thing is that newer games seem to run fairly poorly on hardware just a few months old. I never dreamed that BF2 would bring the 6800GT to its knees. But I get 50ish FPS at medium settings at 1024x768 (quite disappointing).

    I got the dell 2005 fpw but returned it and got a huge CRT coz i couldnt stand the blurring. If you are a hardcore FPS player, i'd suggest getting a CRT. The 2005 FPW is a thing of beauty but playing counter-strike on it made me want to retch.
