Odd issue with taskbar menus...

Ok, I found the answer. I had to turn off all autostart features in Vista. The laptop was getting to the point where the active windows were blinking so much you couldn't even drag files away from one window to another. I hope this post helps someone in the future!

Notebook battery charging problem

I second corkyg. Having had a battery do the exact same thing to me after 2 years of use. Sometimes they just die, and usually if they die suddenly like your's did, it's the charging circuit. But regardless of the reason, might as well chuck it away, because you ain't fixin' it.

Possesed DVD Drive

Maybe you bought a faultly drive that is extremely sensitive to changes in the +12 volt line from your power supply. Any drop in voltage on the line might trigger unexpected results. I'd suggest getting a new one.

PCI card wont go in???

Sometimes the little aluminum tab at the bottom of the card can get bent and then will not slide in between the motherboard and the case. Stop putting so much pressure on it and take a look at the metal frame on the card to verify its geometry is correct.

Ok, it's common for the case fans and whatnot to turn on briefly when you apply power to a power supply (at least that's my experience, half the time it happens, half the time it doesn't). I think your real problem lies with the power switch not working. Check and recheck that you've plugged...

I'd say that you have a power issue or a motherboard issue. Either one leaves you with little or no options. Best thing to do would be to take it apart, assess the damage, then look online for replacement parts.

mobo death?

I have done that exact same thing and cause a +12V line to short against the case. In my case (no pun intended), all I need to do was pull the cover off again, and straighten out the wires, but the damage could have been far worse. So, I think that you are most likely right about shorting...

Overheated comp now doesnt turn on...

When you checked your mobo, did you look on the back side of it? Sometimes that will have telltail signs of darkened solder joints. Also, if your mobo did do (like the above posters mentioned) it very well may have sent other components lethaly high voltage, thus rendering them useless.

The classic BSOD problem. Cant seem to find a cause, or a cure!

Try pulling out a stick of ram and seeing if you get the same errors, then swap (assuming you have 2 sticks). I've seen a similar problem happen on a friends computer after formatting and reinstall. I think we went through 5 reinstalls before concluding it was the ram. Good luck
