SOB restart script for Linux

SoB: Did we start on a new K value?

My production also dropped from ~310K to ~270K. :( First thought on of my nodes was down, then i was worrying something was going wrong with my nodes. :confused: But the i found this thread. :) Now i´m reliefed that no cpu cycles are wasted.;)

SoB - bad news

I think i will try this sb client and if everything works fine i will move all my nodes(4) from seti to sb. Maybe i can add a few more nodes that do part time crunching since we are currently building a small cluster at the University. :)

particle accelerators

You still have the problem of the mass. The closer you get to c the more energy you need to accellerate the particle. To reach c you would need an infinit amount of energy. :( You might gain a bit more speed but won´t solve the problem....(mini black holes seems to me a bit too much efford ;)...

The ultimate quiet computer?

You could use some kind of dielectric oil. It's used for cpacitors and tranformators i think. But you will run in quite a few problems i think... You will still have to cool the liquid. And HDs don't like liquids. ;).

Time to spend some cash... SERVER or NoT?

Why not go for Linux server. Samba works great an is even faster than MS File Sharing. Would save you the 600 for the OS. Since you don´t have inet acccess security is not that critical (don`t know how iportant this isfo you) . But Win2k itself is not really secure if you don´t install about 20...

Why I don?t have to reboot Linux after the install?

As far as I know the Promise TX4 only Supports 4 Drives. I´m running a Software Raid 5 under Linux and i have to run every HD on a different channel. But I wouldn´t recommend an Software Raid Solution this big. Your IO load will be so high that you just cant really use the storage. I think this...

Socks 5 Proxy

Does anyone know a free Socks 5 Proxy Software or one which is available as trial version. Should be cheap (or free) ;). Its only for a small network and should be running on Windows. So just a tiny one would do it. Thanks for your help

Not sure if this is HIGHLY TECHNICAL, but whatever...

Maybe you need a bigger heatsink/fan. Don´t what you are having but you need a good cooling for an XP 1700.

The different hardware setups shouldn´t be a problem if you build your own kernel with everything you need on all machines (might be a huge kernel ;-) ).During startup the kernel will automatically determine what it needs for every system. You might have to use i386 or pentium optimization so...

As far as i know Mosix is not sharing the ram between all nodes.(not shure) The Problem with Memory sharing is the network latency. Nomally you schoul have 7-10ns Ram ....but network latency is maybe 10ms. That the factor 1000....I think this would slow down your system to much. Mosix can be...

Will 70% isopropyl alcohol work to clean a processor/heatsink, or do I need 99%?

I would use spirit. It 95% or more Alcohol...The rest is water...Don´t know about 70% isopropyl.

peltier help......please!

Well, an aircooled peltier is definatly a bad idea... If you have for example an XP2000+ which generates 70W heat and add the 72W peltier you will have problems with the ammount of heat. It means that your heatsink and fan have to cool 142W. This is definatly to much for an aircooled solution...

The heatsink fits but is really close to one of the capacitors. You might have to modify the heatsink. Here is a link where you can check it out and find some more informations about the Alpha 8045 HS on different motherboards.

Overclocking your CPU does´t mean that it produces more heat than an original CPU with the same speed. AMD Datasheet It only produces more heat than a stock cpu at the same speed if you increase the voltage... Here is an sipmle calculation with basic physics everybody should understand...

BIOS Flashing the K7S5A with AMI BIOS!!!

Well the difference between Award and Ami is that the AMI flash programm needs the filename of the new bios to start. It doesn´t have a usermenue... Just enter: aminf329 <name_of_the_bios> Should look like: aminf326 010911.rom Good luck!
