    DOOM 2016 on a Q9650

I have the FSB set to 423MHz with the multiplier set to 9. Core voltage 1.232v. The memory is also overclocked since it normally runs at 400MHz. I had problems with heat at first, but after replacing the cooler with a CoolerMaster Vortex Plus that I picked up for $30, the temps never exceed...

    DOOM 2016 on a Q9650

I was skeptical, but decided to take a chance. My system is ancient, but upgraded to the hilt. Kind of funny actually. I'm running Windows 10 on a Gigabyte EP45-DS3L mobo, with a Q9650 chip I bought off Ebay for $100 overclocked to 3.8 GHz. 8 Gigs of DDR2 RAM, and a GTX 660 video card. Yeah...

Anyone else still running Core 2?

In theory you could upgrade to something like a Q9650, but good luck finding one for a reasonable cost. I mentioned this upthread. It's really more cost-effective to upgrade to a new platform at this point. In your case I think some more RAM might also help, but again, DDR2 is very overpriced...

Anyone else still running Core 2?

It seems to be a matter of preference at this point. Windows 8 seems fine under the hood, but I'm a fan of things like Aero, gadgets and the Start menu so it's a non-starter for me.

Anyone else still running Core 2?

My E8400 will handle something close to that. Having 8 gigs of RAM definitely helps with multitasking. I normally have Chrome open with 20+ tabs while I'm playing Dishonored, Guild Wars 2 or Torchlight II and can alt-tab between the game and Chrome with music playing (streaming Google Music...

    E8400 Synchronous vs. Asynchronous?

I thought I should provide a conclusion in case anyone finds this thread in the future. The benchmark scores are in, and asynchronous wins. I had to loosen the timings a bit to 5-5-5-15 (remaining at 2.1v), but at 5:6 the memory bandwidth clocked in at 8Gb/sec compared to 7.7Gb/sec at 1:1. So...

    e8400 overclock help

Which program are you using to monitor temps? I've found several of them to be unreliable with this chip. I finally settled on Real Temp, which seems to match the readings my BIOS reports. So far I've pushed mine to 3.8 and it was stable for the short time I kept it there, but load temps...

    e8400 overclock help

Unless you changed the RAM multiplier, it should already be overclocked. Since the e8400 runs at 9*333, DDR800 has to use a 5:6 divider to hit 800MHz (333/5:6 = ~400). So with the same divider, 400 FSB would give you (400/5:6 = 480) or DDR960. Of course if you changed the RAM divider to...

    New to Vista 64

Best answer I've found to this question is that in some cases you may have a 32-bit and 64-bit version of the same program. For example, Windows 7 x64 includes two versions of IE (I think Vista x64 does as well, but I'm not sure since I've never tried it). The 32-bit version is sort of a...

Why should I upgrade to Win7 from XP?

I was an XP die-hard as well ... was running XP Pro SP3 until last week when I tried dual-booting the Win7 RC. I liked it so much I ended up reformatting and installing Win7 x64 as my primary OS. It's hard to describe, but it just has an awesome feel to it. The user experience is very smooth...

    E8400 Synchronous vs. Asynchronous?

Thanks ... I figured the difference would be slim, but it's the principle of the thing as well ... I built this system and it gives me satisfaction to know it's configured optimally. Guess I need to run some benchmarks. Super Pi seems to take 13s for 1M regardless of what I do to the RAM, so I...

    E8400 Synchronous vs. Asynchronous?

So I finally got around to overclocking my E8400 (E0). It runs great @ 3.7GHz, slightly undervolted to 1.2v (BIOS). Temps are around 38c idle, 54c full load (Orthos small FFTs). My question is about the RAM. I'm running 4Gb of OCZ DDR-800 in dual channel. (And I can finally see all 4Gb...

    Windows 7 - Audio Processing

I believe it's software-based like Vista. But you can get around that (on Creative sound cards at least) by installing ALchemy. I'm using the Creative beta drivers for Windows 7 with ALchemy and so far it seems to work fine. I skipped Vista as well, for that and other reasons. Sound seems...

WoW on this system, where's my bottleneck?

It also depends on which areas of WoW you're talking about. Dalaran for example is very, very CPU dependant. Legacy areas not so much. I improved my framerate in Dalaran from the mid-teens to the mid-50s just by switching an AMD x2 3500+ platform for an e8400 (using an 8800gt at the time).

See here to check for local availability. This model has been reviewed favorably in the Video and General Hardware forums here as a good value for gaming/multimedia. Used to go for $200+ on NewEgg but now discontinued. Picked one up last night @ local BB -- works great so far. Price is...

Can you help me with a new build?

Keeping your current CPU and RAM will be a challenge, since socket 939 was discontinued awhile ago. Your best bet is probably Ebay, or you might get lucky and find a local shop with an old 939 board in stock. If you decide to upgrade to a new CPU, you'll be better off going with Intel C2D at...

    Upgrading my computer

Like DSF, I'm curious to know what your current system components are and what specific symptoms you've been having. I'm also kind of curious why your husband doesn't step up and help you fix it, but maybe he's not the enthusiast type. ;) I've probably spent more time working on my GF's...

    Early 45nm Deneb Spotted

Well, I did say "when it comes to real world performance." I'm a gamer as well, and SuperPi speeds notwithstanding, where is the killer app that would convince me to upgrade to C2D or Quad core right now? I can play Crysis with no issues, it just requires a little tweaking. Assassin's Creed...

So it's time to make my machine feel new again!

Wow. I paid about $100 for my 939 x2, and I was a bit sad when they dropped to $60 or so a few months later. Supply and demand, I guess.

    Early 45nm Deneb Spotted

The funny thing is, I feel the same way about my 3800+ @2.53GHz. Could it be that CPUs haven't really advanced all that much in the past couple of years, when it comes to real world performance? Sure, SuperPi might be fearing for its life, but last time I checked, pi was a constant. Fact of...

    AMD 3800x2 Socket 939

It's funny you should mention Assassin's Creed. I just bought it yesterday via Steam, DL'd overnight and started playing this evening. So far, it runs great on my rig with all graphics options maxed out, 1280x1024. The only concession I've had to make is to lower the Crowd Density after I...

    Dual chanel and games

As I said, I have an A64 CPU myself. I'm well aware of the integrated memory controller. I have extensively tested different DDR configurations on my own system, including dual-channel vs. single-channel, 1T vs. 2T command rate, memory bus speeds and latency timings, etc. My answer to the OP...

    AMD 3800x2 Socket 939

I agree with you about minimum framerate. I've found it can often be kept at an acceptable level with a little bit of tweaking, even with average framerates on the lower side. For example, I was able to play Crysis on my system with an acceptable framerate about 99% of the time, after tweaking...

    AMD 3800x2 Socket 939

Indeed we are. I just don't see 45 fps @ 1600x1200 as a "glaring weakness", in fact that's quite playable in my book. Obviously it's slower than CPUs that are 2 years younger and 3 times the price, but that's technology for you.
  31. S

    AMD 3800x2 Socket 939

It's only a bottleneck at lower resolutions. I upgraded from a 6600GS to an 8800GT on my x2 3800+ about 6 months ago, and the difference was HUGE. I spent more than $168 on it, and I wouldn't call it a mistake by any means. It's allowed me to put off upgrading my mobo, CPU and RAM by another...
  32. S

    AMD 3800x2 Socket 939

I have to ask: Where exactly is this "glaring weakness"? The X2 performed respectably in virtually every game they threw at it. Not bad for a chip that's supposedly obsolete.
  33. S

    AMD 3800x2 Socket 939

The performance he would get with his current system and the 4850, playing @ 1600x1200, would be nearly identical to the system you're suggesting he build. The difference between DDR and DDR2 by itself is negligible, and the 5400+ doesn't even represent a cache upgrade compared to his current...
  34. S

    AMD 3800x2 Socket 939

That Guru3d article kinda says it all. Obviously the Intel C2Ds are the best value if you're starting from scratch, but the old x2 they tested really held its own. There's just not much incentive to upgrade right now. So, might as well upgrade the video card and save your CPU/mobo upgrade for...

    Dual chanel and games

I dug up that example because I wanted to make sure it holds true with DDR2. I know from personal experience dual-channel makes very little difference using DDR on an AMD x2. But I take your point, ideally we would look at a real-world performance comparison using DDR2 on an AMD x2, just in...

Very little difference, except on synthetic benchmarks. See here for an example of some real-world test results. Bottom line: dual-channel memory is way over-hyped.

    X2 3600+ to Phenom 9600 Black Edition

I know it's a cliche around here, but I'm gonna say it anyway because it also happens to be true: Synthetic benchmark scores do not necessarily correlate to real-world performance. Every hardware enthusiast has to learn this basic truth sooner or later. I remember pulling my hair out...

PC- Build for running MISSION CRITICAL trading application

Have to agree, if it's mission critical and money is no object, why take any chances? Building your own PC is for enthusiasts and gamers. Which case: Raidmax Smilodon or CoolerMaster CM690?

I recently replaced an old Antec SX-II case with a Smilodon. I've been happy with it so far. The fold-out motherboard tray makes it easy to put together, and the construction feels sturdy. It looks interesting without being gaudy, and airflow is fantastic. My CPU temps dropped by roughly 15c...
