Decided to get the SATA Hitachi "DEATHSTAR" 250gig - great price and specs

I disagree. A 16MB buffer for a 300GB HDD is unneccesary. Hitachi's new 400GB HDD uses only a 8MB buffer and in benches manages to come out on top of access and seek times. But then again Hitachi have implemented more than one new technology in their 7k400 400GB model that ensure for example...

I would definitely get a case without a PSU and buy a PSU seperately, unless you plan on getting another PSU anyway and disregarding the one that comes with your case. A good, solid PSU is a must these days for ensuring system stability. A decent PSU alone can cost more than a case that comes...

That won't work - windows will still see a total size of 138GB, and any partitions you make will still only add up to that.

I had a similar problem ages ago when 120GB+ HDDs first hit the scene. Fixed it by firstly getting the right update for windows (which i believe comes as standard now as part of SP1 and SP2) and also by installing the latest Intel drivers for my motherboard chipsets. Had to do both in order...

Want/need new heatsink for 478...

I have one of these Zalman ALCu's and think its fvckin GREAT! It's quiet and does an EXCELLENT job at cooling. I have it hooked up to a fan controller, and at night can turn it down to the slowest speed setting, which reduces the noise to barely audible whilst still doing a good job at cooling...

Newbie to water cooling

Your room will still pretty much be the same temperature with water cooling as opposed to standard air cooling. Afterall, your system componenets will still be generating heat, heat that will eventually be dissipated by the reservoir into the surroundings of your room. Your system components...

Digital Pictures - Why Does The Filesize Vary So Much?

Yea - the camera doesn't save in a raw format and does indeed compress them as JPGs. Cool - thanks a lot mate - that made sense!!! I've always known about outputting only final projects as JPG and saving intermediate steps as raw PNGs etc, but never really knew how JPGs do what they do...

Yea - i wasn't sure about that either, but i mean if the mobo manual says it supports PC2100, then surely it means it can run the cpu at stock whilst running the PC2100 - ? Else it wouldn't say it supports PC2100 - ???

I would boot off the smaller one personally and use the larger as storage. I like to keep system and storage stuff seperate - and storage needs space! If both are 7200rpm, 8MB HDDs, you aren't really going to notice 'any' performance difference between the two - regardless of one of them...

Erm, that's not correct - is it?. I always thought ... The FSB : DRAM ratio has to be setup so that the PC2100 memory is fed the correct DDR266 working frequency. That's all. Regardless of the memory plugged in - DDR266, DDR333 or DDR400 - the CPU will run at stock - only the memory...

Hitachi Deskstar Hard Drive

I actually have 3 different series of the Hitachi Deskstars. All perform very well and imo have improved in performance as the series as HDD CAPACITIES have increased. In reply to your question then, yes - all HDDs of a particular series perform pretty much the same.

LOL. Why do you need to get one before your child is born (congrats btw)? You planning on storing the baby away on the HDD or something - LOL. Well there really is no performance benefit of getting a SATA HDD other than for 'future proofing' as mobo's are now moving towards SATA interfaces...

Yea, said multiple ppl are probably right. These new gfx cards need decent headroom from the cpu/mem to fully shine. An upgrade wouldn't be a bad idea given you have a nice gfx card.
