A SSD is the single biggest performance improvement you can make.

Only bummer would be coming into work, and having to go back to the slow desk top. No, we don't have SSDs here at work. We've got hundreds of old Dells that are leased. They're slow as a turtle and crunch the drive all day installing software updates. So no, I'm not going to rush to buy...

    PC not starting at all

I have a similar issue with an old 939 gaming machine I've given up on. I've run memtest and the memory is good. When the system boots into windows (XP), I get a BSOD. I boot in safe mode, and it's right at the last driver (AGP). I've since found that when windows is done loading all...

    Finalizing Build

Many are going with 128gb on the SSD, Corsair seems to be the popular choice. Read the Newegg reviews. If you go with the 80GB Intel, you'll wish you had bought 128gb. I wouldn't mess with water cooling until you have the system up and running. The Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro is what I'm...

Intel SSD price drop - what does it mean

Because 128gb seems to be the sweet spot now. Plus many are giving the Corsair drive more reviews on Newegg. I'm going with 128gb in the rig I'm shopping for, and it was all based on the Newegg reviews. I know that sounds whacked, but that's how I do it. There's nothing wrong with what...

    Buying New System

Nice graph. I'm in the same boat as everyone else around here. 6 year old 939 system, ready to build. People are supposed to upgrade their video card after 2-3 years, and that lets them go to 5. The problem happens when the video card spec changes (AGP To PCI-E). But I don't...

do we get gtx480/470 benchmarks today?

I imagine Hardocp is going to get the card first. And since it's Friday, it will take them at least a day to do all the bench marks and write up the article. Unless they come out with a "breaking news" type thing as a headline grab for the ratings.

    Dying hard drive or paranoia?

Had a hard drive in my main 24/7 machine become un-recognized. Lucky for me, I had another drive laying around. The bad drive came back after cooling off. Used a free unix utility called CloneZilla to clone the drive. Was going to RMA the drive back to Seagate, but the web site...

How much data do you have backed up with Carbonite or Mozy?

Online backup is another safety net. Everyone reading this should have all their important stuff in more than one place. Multiple computers, external hard drives, DVDs, Tapes, offsite.

    Any difference between DVD burners?

Consider a Blue Ray burner from Pioneer. $200 but then you can burn 50 gig blue ray discs to back up all your data. Right now the discs cost $10 each, but that price should come down.

    New Nvidia Rumors?

So I guess I'm over reacting, that's what I was trying to find out. And I agree that all cards will be compatible (3.0 with 2.0 and so on). It was just such a bummer to build that AGP system and then have no upgrade after a couple years. Yes, I could have bought a new MB, CPU, memory, GPU...

    New Nvidia Rumors?

The other thing to talk about is PCIe 3.0 due out this year. Read the Wiki and it puts things into perspective. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express The spec is due out in Q2 2010. It would be a bummer to build a new machine with Fermi (or whatever), then have PCIe 3.0 come out with...

Time to upgrade 5-yr-old rig, need to build for photo and video editing.

Your building a whole new rig at this point. SSD will help if you run Windows 7 with the trim function. The good news with the new system is you'll get a huge 2TB drive for all your files. But it's going to cost more than $800 to build something that's fast. All you have to do is...

252 gigs of 450 on my Dreamhost web account. I uploaded all my pictures, music, and other directories manually using FTP. Took me 6 months, upload speed on Bellsouth is only 50K or less than 1 meg. And the biggest file I can upload is about 200 meg. Anything bigger and the FTP times...

Need several TB of storage, concerned about 2TB drive reliability

Water cooling becomes a PITA after a couple years. In my case, the pump housing cracked and started leaking. I got a new pump but it wasn't the same exact one. Koolance no longer made it, so the one I have sticks out of the case. Plus you'll have 3 fans on top of the computer, as...

    CPU versus GPU

A few years ago the GPU meant much more. I ran my own tests back in the day and found that... OCing the GPU meant a 5 fps difference in the HL2 Benchmarks. OCing the CPU only gained 2 frames. I'd still lean towards the GPU buying the midrange model and then OCing it when needed.

Blue Ray DVDs will be one answer, 50 gigs a disc. Still kinda expensive at $10 each, but the burner can be bought for $200 right now. The price will eventually come down. 8 gig DVDs used to be $10 each, now you can buy a 50 spindle at Sams for $60. Nothing is perfect, which is why I...

    Is my graphic card dying?

GPUs that need the extra molex connectors cause power supplies to wear out. That's why you hear talk these days about the dedicated 12v rail. And that's why I have an extra PS on the shelf. Try a different Molex from your PS to the GPU. I've done that and it worked for a while. But...

    Upgrade from Athlon x2 4200+

I think we're going to see many more threads of people with a 939 systems that want to upgrade. You're lucky in the fact that your GPU is PCI-E. You can go with the stock heat sink fan to start. And your DVD player won't work if it's IDE, needs to be Sata. It's a question of whether...

Is this a good time to buy?

The only thing that would make people wait right now would be Sata 6gb (from 3gb), and USB 3.0. These are minor and there's limited items that take advantage of these faster speeds. For example, if you go on Newegg and search for Sata 6GB hard drives, you'll find one, a Seagate 2TB drive...

Is a 1994 Compaq computer with 16mb of harddrive space running MS-DOS worthless?

Anybody enjoys tinkering with old PCs to find out how slow they are?

Kingpin was the best. Yeah, that's the problem with the older machines. Youtube videos load slowly and stutter because the machine is crunching the hard drive. I've tried loading up the older games, fun to remember the old days, but not the same.
