That's plausible... do newer ATi drivers really improve performance that much (I'd assume nV's didn't get slower)? I mean, that's pretty damn impressive, if they do.

Hmm. According to AT's benchmarks, the two are very close at SM2.0 without AA/AF, and the GT falls behind somewhat with AA/AF on, but it's not a very huge difference. Maybe you should try different drivers or something, dunno, but it should probably be performing faster than it is.

5800U Doom3 Shocker!

Clock speeds and memory indeed look to be identical (though one is DDR2 and the other 3), but the architecture is wildly different. 6600GT - 8x1/16x0 pipes, SM3.0, rotated grid AA 5800U - 4x2/8x0 pipes, SM2.0(b?), ordered grid AA, horrible at DX9 and bigger performance hit with AA/AF

Well, I'm not particularly good at notebooks, but the GamePC ones look appealing, the CEN3 and 4 particularly. With a 1.5GHz P-M and Mobility 9700, it's roughly the equivalent of a desktop A64 2500+ (which doesn't exist) and Radeon 9600 Pro, which is pretty good and you're not going to get...

Is the Galaxy the one with the VGA Silencer as cooling? If so, that may be worth waiting for; otherwise just get the POV, it's good enough. (The Asus looks cooler, but it's single slot ergo higher temps ergo lower overclocking - I wouldn't get it, especially if you have to wait a week.)

Depends on what you want to use it for. From benchmarks I've seen the P-Ms perform on par with equivalently clocked (not rated) A64s at games, which is pretty damn impressive. An A64 2800+ is 1.8GHz and performs roughly on par with a P4 3.2GHz at games... the P-M is 1.7GHz, so it's probably...

Doom 3 Benchmarks at [H]

I'll make the prediction that the 6800 will lead the X800 Pro by the same amount as the 6800GT leads the X800XTPE, at settings where the 128MB memory isn't a bottleneck. Looking at raw fillrates, the 6800 is roughly 30% slower than the GT, and the same ratio holds true for the X800Pro and XTPE.

This is exactly what TR did, except they did it with a 5950U and 9800XT (seeing as the newer ones were not available back then). An updated version with the 6800 and X800 would be nice to see though... Actually, now that I think of it, it's rather odd that it's doing this in Halo of all things...

From what I've seen with the Tech Report's testing on the issue (which they did with a 5950U a while ago), it only gives such huge performance boosts as in Halo here to nVidia cards, but ATi cards are also rather noticeably faster in the same benchmarks (than with a VIA board).

I'll copy a post I made in a previous thread: That was with the 3G iPod. Now that it's cheaper and has longer battery life, the two minuses are just about nil - though I would wait for some reviews to see if the battery life claim is actually true, because afaik, they didn't change the battery...

Looks fine, change the motherboard to the K8N-E, but otherwise there's not much else I can suggest that doesn't break the budget. If you downgrade to a good 19" CRT ($250-ish) you can upgrade the video card to a 6800GT and the processor to a 3000+ or 3200+, but I'm not saying it's the right...

Well, one of those is an Ultra "Golden Sample", while the other is a vanilla 5700, so the former will be rather faster (the extra memory is irrelevant). I was under the impression, though, that speed wasn't an issue, just the dual-DVI, as you had a 9600 with the original configuration?

Here's an interesting review. In some of the benchmarks, the performance hit from AF was completely minimal, while in others (Far Cry and UT2004, for example), it nearly halved the speed. There was nothing in between. And it's odd that it comes out in two such different games, because afaik...

How? If she's doing, for example, rendering, the A64 will be slower, and less bang for the buck. There's currently no such thing as a processor that's categorically better than the rest at everything, it all depends on the application.
