    Choosing between two oscilloscopes.

You really can't go wrong with either scope. Tek does make some good stuff. Rigol is a bit lower end, so you MAY have to deal with some firmware bugs, but Rigol also makes good, solid stuff. I would give Tek an "A" and Rigol a "B+."

Colorado Governor signs Gun COntrol Bill; Magpul announces they are moving.

All Colorado residents: I need a LOT of help. Don't just whine and complain, DO SOMETHING!!! I have started a forum that I intend to be a gathering place for people who are trying to get Hickenlooper recalled. I intend to have forms for download, FAQs, and regional forums where people can...

    Basic circuit theory

I try to avoid latches whenever possible. On my current project, we have a rule: the clock scheme must fit on one letter-size paper drawn with a dull crayon. I work at Agilent.

    simple question about a cyclotron

The electric field DOES just cause them to go back and forth, if that was all that it did. There is also a magnetic field too. Moving electrons experience a sideways force as they move through a field, which causes them to go in a circle.

    Basic circuit theory

I know. I have seen that too - a few times. Very frustrating... Trying to figure out what is going on is quite frustrating. What is worse is finding hold violations, and there is NO REASON for it. All paths to a regsiter have plenty of setup slack, but there are hold problems. Then, you...

    Basic circuit theory

The BEST way to learn is to help design a multi-million gate ASIC. :-) Back when I used to do FPGA work for a living I understood setup paths very well, but FPGAs never have hold problems. Now I do ASIC work (both front end and back end), and I have found that hold problems are often harder to...

    Gun question for the Gurus

Back to your original question... Do you want a long gun, or something hand-held??? What do you want to do with it? Target shoot? Carry for self-defense? If you want something to just shoot and have fun with, the venerable 22 LR is the way to go. Inexpensive to buy, inexpensive to shoot, as...

    Phone Interviews

At my current job (ASIC designer), I had a phone screen -- job in Colorado, I was in Florida at the time. It was VERY technical. After 45 minutes, I felt like I had done three rounds with Mike Tyson. So, is it a technical interview?

    HELP WITH PCB Design

Eagle is certainly a good choice, but not the only one. Go to your local library (the largest branch in your area is a good start) and look for "Nuts and Volts" magazine. Lots of board prototype services place advertisements there. Pick a few ads, go to a few web sites, etc. You can also...

    Circuit monitoring question

A quick google image search of "voltage follower op amp" turns up this: http://forum.allaboutcircuits.com/showthread.php?t=62562 This type of circuit just "copies" a voltage while having almost no effect on the ciruit being monitored at all. Assuming that the sensor does NOT have one side...

    Circuit monitoring question

Hmmmm. I am more of a digital expert, but the first thing that pops into my head is to get a couple of op-amps. Set each to unity gain, and hook up the inputs to each end of the sensor. Op-amps typically have a very high input impedance (get the one with the highest impedance you can find)...

    Space Elevator

The REAL reasons a space elevator will never happen... 1) Begin stuck next to strangers in an elevator for a couple of hours. The awkward silence to the 10th floor is NOTHING compared to this baby. 2) Hours of elevator music would cause anybody to kill themselves.

    Effect of EM on computer

Really, NOTHING on a modern computer can be bothered by a static magnetic field. The ONLY exception might be a hard drive, but those are completely encased in metal, so it would take one heck of a strong field to bother those. ** BEGIN EDIT ** Well, a magnet with the strength of an MRI machine...

What happens to light at the end of the universe?

Let's assume that you could travel infinitely fast... This means that you COULD go fast enough to reach the edge of the universe. You would eventually wind up back where you started. It is similar of you leave your house and go due north. Eventually, you would hit the north pole and start...

    Have a soldering question

When you say that you have solder "gun," I hope that you do not have one of those huge 100 watt guns -- the wrong tool for the job. You really need a soldering iron with a power of somewhere around 10 watts or so. You are trying to solder electronics, not plumbing or a car radiator. **EDIT**...

    Low-jitter/low-latency hardware.

PLEASE forget the term Jitter. It really has no impace on what you really want. The jitter of the system clock has NOTHING TO DO with what you are talking about. First of all, each peripheral will have its own clock. If you are talking about audio applications, your sound card (assuming an...

    Low-jitter/low-latency hardware.

Wow. It looks like one of your prime benchmarks would be audio -- now that we have something concrete, we can go somewhere. Probably latency would be your biggest killer in audio apps. I would recommend, as a first pass, using ASIO4All audio drivers for your audio hardware. If that is not...

    Low-jitter/low-latency hardware.

Ok. What is the point of "low jitter." I assume that you are not concerned about clock jitter, but the latency of the PC reacting to some event. What are you trying to accomplish? Digital audio work? Flight control system for a missile? Give us a clue here... ***EDIT*** If what you are...

    Low-jitter/low-latency hardware.

Huh? I don't get it. Jitter is defined as a period-to-period difference of a clock from an ideal clock at the same frequency. Using modern hardware, it simply doesn't matter. An ultra-clean clock with absolutely NO jitter might allow you to overclock your hardware by a few tens of Herts (not...

    LED lighting question

Old-fashioned bulbs put out a LOT of infra-red light, so they are pretty inefficient. The infra-red, however, spreads out, so the "wasted" energy goes all over the room. LED lights are more efficient, but no IR light at all. Any inefficiencies show up as heat at the die -- so you need the...

    Electrical circuit design help

Nope. Sorry. The problem is that you have to understand what a motor actually is -- a long wire (really, an inductor). If the solar cells are in insufficient lighting (say, an overcast day), then they will output a small amount of current. That current will go straight through the motor...

I actually work for Agilent so I may be biased ;-) I helped a little on the ASIC that is in the latest DSOX2000 series, so I can recommend those... Electrical circuit design help

First, a disclaimer: I am not an analog guy, I make my living doing digital stuff. But, I do have a MSEE, so I know a little more than the average person. A capacitor by itself will NOT help you in the least. Adding a capacitor MAY be useful in full daylight to help your car cross a small...

US Supreme Court and 2nd Amendment

HOT (at least, to me): Brother 5840CN multi-function dual tray fax/inkjet printer/scanner with USB and Ethernet

If you pull the cartridges out, there is a small tab that slides into a slot on the printer. There is an optical "float" in there that the printer uses to read the ink level. If you cover that thing with electrical tape, you should be golden. Note that this MAY damage your printer. If the...

HOT (at least, to me): Brother 5840CN multi-function dual tray fax/inkjet printer/scanner with USB and Ethernet

I had my wife order one for her business. Really, the ink in the box is worth almost what they are asking. It is like buying the ink and getting the printer for $10. BTW: I never did have any luck getting the thing to print under Ubuntu.

HOT (at least, to me): Brother 5840CN multi-function dual tray fax/inkjet printer/scanner with USB and Ethernet

Note that I have almost this same unit at home. The only difference is that this one has the card reader built-in. I tried to use Carrot Ink in it one time, and it WOULD NOT WORK. So, if you get this, avoid Carrot Ink. The problem was that the brother ink uses a float to determine how much...

Dead: WDC 1TB hard drive at Buy.com for $189.99 shipped

The "GP" drives are "green." Lower RPM, lower performance, less sucking off of the power supply. This is perfect for a NAS box or USB drive. Not good for a primary system drive. If only I had the money, I would get two. I am trying to build a NAS RAID-1 box, but the drives are definately...
